Looking to buy a chest deep freeze, seems like most "garage ready" units are manual defrost, and I have been told to look for units that have manual based controls (so, less moterboards, more thermostats).

What brands are still worth a damn these days, GE, Frigidaire, maytag? Probably shopping at Costco because they extend the warranty, the return policy is stellar, and the free white glove delivery is fantastic.

Cant help with your question. I have been buying used ones at a local appliance place. Some have lasted 10 years, some just a few, but honestly didnt get much better service out of the few newer ones I tried. I have multiple freezers and try to keep them about half full or so, incase one decides to crap out.

My last unit from Lowes has been decent. Not nearly the quality of the 30 plus year old unit it replaced. But hey, it's half the weight so when it craps out it want take 4 grown men to move!

This
I think it's 5 years old now, and no issues

I have a commercial one that I got when my MIL moved. It's upright, but it's a tank. It even has an alarm on it if it gets above temp. I'll try to remember to look at it and post. And it's not commercial like restaurant. It's a whirlpool or something.

Get something old and cheap. Been grabbing popsicles out of this chest freezer since I was 3 and now my 3 year old is doing the same thing 🤙🏼

So seriously though we have a cheap Lowe’s Frigidaire that’s been going strong for about 8 yrs but it’s small

Then we have a large Black Diamond that I’m the third owner of and I like it cause it has a split top

We also have a mid size upright made by Roper that I bought of here a few yrs ago and does great as well.

I quit doing the chest style when I started getting more concerned with floor space - going vertical as often as I could. I also found it was less troublesome getting what I needed without grabbing a eskimo coat and shovel and digging at length, then restacking.

I got a cheapo upright fast freeze and frost-free unit for $600 bones about 4 years ago. No issue. Also held up very well during helene on generator running only a couple hours am and couple hours pm. Zero food spoiled.

It was very convenient being able to lift myself into the truck, unload by myself, and roll into place.

Whatever is dented and cheap at one of the box stores. I think I’m up to 5 chest freezers. I would like to swap two out for verticals when they die. New house will have a dedicated circuit in the garage for chest freezers. Our house now, the garage is tied into outside GFCI’s and if one trips, you lose the garage sometimes without knowing. Really fun when a branch smacks the cover off and rain trips it in a storm and you come back to hundreds of pounds of rotten meat stinking up the garage.
