Man, if we had these at work, maybe we could avoid all the standard work instructions and safety training.

My experience... Paint/seal/cover the inside of the coop, atleast the floor and that tray. Eventually they will start to rot, if not. I was in a hurry and now wish I had done something.

Also, as nice of a roost as you have created, they will all try to perch on the window sill, esp since you made it easy for them to get over to it.

Everything is treated wood except the outside oak panels and the ramp and the window sill (great observation by the way). The plan is to put down some old vinyl flooring as a protection, but the edges will still be problematic. Paint is a solid idea. Any particular recommendations?

My memorial Day project...

I feel like I should be able to buy materials for 1/3 of what I actually spent, but after a day and a half the old rotted steps are gone and these are in. Worst part is chucking the 6x6's in and out to get the hole in the right spot

Funny.....I just came across the patent for your fancy chicken door and used it as a reference in the patent I was examining.

I made the mistake and didnt paint mine, so not sure how any would hold up, but I would like use an oil based exterior paint. My floor is holding up fine after ~5yrs, doing deep bedding, but it is stained in a few places from where it was wet and dried. The underside of mine is ~4ft in the air, so it has plenty of air to dry out from both sides. I am contemplating getting some type of vinyl/melamine sheet to slide in next time I clean it out.

Anywhere there is the slightest lip/ledge, they will try to roost. Ive even had them fly up and roost on top of the walls, between the rafters. My coop is only 4ft tall inside vs how tall yours is.

Is that why you went with 4x4's on the front?
Nah, wanted the 2x4 handrail to line up with it. The original steps had 4x4's all around and it was wiggly so wanted the 6x6x16 and more concrete to sturdy things up a bit. And the 6x6's are holding the majority of the weight. Those 4x4x8's are really only holding the handrail. The concrete sidewalk to the pool actually goes under the bottom step, I've got a 2x8 under the stair stringers at the 4x4 post as well, but it doesn't have much moment only up one riser.

But now that you mention it, sort of looks like I cheaped out on the bottom poles... But the math said it was fine 🤪
