Random Thoughts.....

Raging debate in our household tonight about the definition of a hole (which sprang from the question of how many holes apair of pants has - my contention being 1).
Colloqually people often refer to things as a hole just as something that has a cavity, like a hole in the ground. Personally I believe a true hole is defined by a porous opening having space on either side that is greater than the passage between (the passage being the hole). Anything else is just an indentation, crevass, ditch, cavity, etc.
e.g. your nose is a hole, the top of a water bottle is a hole, a nut is a hole (a portable and convenient one) but if I take a shovel and start digging, it isn't a hole, its a ditch... until I uncover a hollow space underground, then I've made a hole that goes somewhere.
Similarly... a pants pocket isn't a hole, unless its worn out and has, well, a hole in it (you know, for playing pocket pool)
Digging a hole in the ground is certainly a hole, but when you fill in half of it, it’s not half a hole. It’s still just a hole. Same if you want to call it a ditch.

I'd contend it's a ditch, not a hole.

If you take a nail and push it into the wall 1/8" inch and pull it out, did you create a hole? Or just a dent?

I'm surprised no one has tried to snuff you out with a pillow in the middle of the night.....

I'd start sleeping with one eye open 😎😂

By this logic - the top of a water bottle isnt a hole.

yes it is because the space on either side is larger than the passage.
Top of a cup isn't a hole.

By this definition, humans don't have any holes. I've met enough assholes to know that's not true.
Actually humans are pretty much just a large tube with additional extensions. Parts of the tubes are closed off to air at times - but there's a continuous path between the big hole at the top and the smaller hole at the bottom. OK so some people are just really big on both ends.
Your nose is a hole because your nasal passage is larger than you nostrils.

Is that a hole or just a restriction? Putting a zip tie on a fuel line doesn't make a hole in the fuel line.
I would say that fuel line was already one really long hole. You just made part of the hole smaller.

EDIT: this depends on the situation. The disconnected fuel line is definitely a long thing with a hole in it. If its connected on both ends it kinda of depends on the style and size of injection system its connected to. The tank end, being larger, satisfies that side.

larger in what way? Diameter or volume?
What if I crush the water bottle? The hole remains unchanged but suddenly isnt a hole?

Actually I think our fearlss leader has the perfect answer for this whole discussion

Diameter on the other side of the passage. Volume creates way too many loopholes, duh.

This is the Random Thoughts thread right? why would we expect anything else?

So a wine glass has a hole, but a solo cup doesn't? Got it......

yes

I recognize people have their own definitions for words and may disagree

If only there was some book that had been collecting definitions for a few years.......

Oh look! There is!

A hole is both an opening through something and a hollowed-out place and a cave, pit, or well in the ground. So we're all right.
