My kids are getting old enough that they need to experience the thrill of Gran Turismo (and I need to kick their butts!). The newest gaming system I have owned was a Playstation 2 with Gran Turismo 2 or 3, but I swear GT1 on PS1 was peak, probably because I was young and it was a very imprinted memory haha. I see theres now like 7 Gran Turismos and 5 Playstations... What's a good setup without spending a bunch of money? I assume the newer games can do online stuff, which I have no interest in, so I'm thinking someting like a PS1, 2, or 3, but I don't know anything about the newer stuff. Also, anybody got something they want to offload?

My son and I played GTA vice city and San Andreas when he was in middle school. Then we stepped up to GTA 4 but we liked GTA 5 the very best.
My son played story mode and got extremely far. He saved his game at I would just free play. We would play in free mode for HOURS and had a ball.
We played on the PS2 Platform. My youngest took that with her when she went to college. Haven't played since.

My PS4 sits on top of my PS2, both get equal use lol. I like the PS4 because everything is on the console ie no game discs to keep up with or memory cards like the older units, and a lot of the older games can be downloaded and played on it. But some games can't, and the nostalgia factor of the PS2 is hard to beat. I also have the PS3 but it isn't a backwards compatible one that works with PS2 games so it doesn't get used as much. For your situation that's probably the console I would look for. Find some PS2 and 3 games you like or would like to try, then if the kids become gamers you can get move up to a 4 or 5. Or if you're computer savvy most of the games have a computer version or an emulator online and can be played with console controllers.

Have played GT in decades. Forza Motorsports (not Horizon) is where its at. Get an Xbox Series S or X and enjoy.

The latest version doesn't have split screen multi-player so you have to go back one game.

Wait!!! Terrible ending! I was painting a picture.. all these memories and laughs …… and then your youngest took it to college!?! Still tryin to figure out how you & your son bonded throughout these years and then your daughter snagged it!
Waiting for the sequel .

The boy now plays online games with the daughters boyfriend. I haven't played a game at my home since she took the PS2

The boy and I first started playing games when he was REAL young.

Goldeneye, and zelda. I had no interest in zelda, but he LOVED Goldeneye. He loved playing 2 player and trying to shoot me. He would get so pissed that I sniped him every time 🤣

After college I was over at his house and he was playing some sniper game (this may have been 8 or so years ago) and he wiped the DAMN FLOOR with me 🤣🤣🤣 he had NO mercy 🤦🏾‍♂️ and he was loving it 🤣

Humbling day when your boy gets better than you. My 9 year old likes playing arcade racing games (Mario cart, hot wheels unleashed, etc.) I can still kick his butt at shooters and Sim racers, but we ran 2 races on Hotwheels a few weeks ago. He won both and I finished dead last both. He beat me at cruisin usa last time we went to an arcade as well.

Tell me about it. I’m 36. My kids are 16,15,12 and 5… thought it was fun then now I’m regretting it im sooo many ways! Kidding , wouldn’t trade it for nothing. But way to close in age we are. I got out of the games when I was young and glad I’m not back into it. My oldest has 2 monitors and at night he thinks the best time is between 10pm and 4 am. Weird a$$ noises and screaming and yelling. Kids these days ! 🤣. Pretty sure I think I’m the best but I bet he’d kick my tail! He’s Xbox I grew up on PlayStation. Played Halo MANY years ago and couldn’t figure out the toggle on the Xbox! I like colored shapes instead 🤪

If you go the ps2 route, I might know where to find two Logitech force feedback steering wheel and pedal sets....
that sounds like a fun route. If one becomes available I would be interested. Seems like a great thing for my 9 year old and I have a ps2.

Also to add. I have a ps5 and it has some good games that I enjoy with my kid together. There is quite a few of racing games that are popular that I have not tried like forza

Ive got my kids old PS2 and a box of games sitting in our media room. Can't bring myself to toss them out, havent powered it up in years no idea if it works. But...if you decide Ps2 is the way to go...

Just buy a ps5 and gt7. Gt7 has a weekly challenge of 5 races unique for the week that have decent rewards so even after you've beat all the regular races, there's still a reason to play for about a hour every week. Im seriously considering flying out to Cali to rent a car to run Laguna seca for my 40th birthday if I can get my license by then and I have playing GT as a kid to thank for that.

I was a forza kid but man do i remember the first time hitting the tunnel turn at laguna.... Never seen a car get that much air on a racetrack...

The Super Nintendo is hooked up in the boys room. I have to show the entire house who’s the boss at street fighter every now and then. Got an old ps3 in my man room I still mess with. As for a platform, I’d just pull the trigger on a ps5 and get all of the new good graphics stuff.

I got my kids a ps5 pro for Christmas last year. Lots of older games redone for the newer console are available.

I forget what VR game we got with it climbing mountains, fighting robotic dinosaurs and solving puzzles. It’s wild.

PS5. I wouldn't bother with anything older at this point. The tech has moved way beyond since even the 4. For anything older, I'd go with one of those Chinese emulator systems they're always selling on crap like Temu, They are surprisingly good for the price, and generally include every older system you'd ever want. Amazon has a ton for like 50 bucks with controllers. That's cheap enough to give it a shot and see how it plays out. It's like a Roku or Fire Stick, just plugs into your HDMI.

Frankly, I abandoned gaming on a console years ago. I do PC only now. I bought a gaming laptop back in like 2020 that still holds up today. It's super convenient because I can just bring it to work whenever.

Valid points, but we have different use cases ;) I want some nostalgia and to goof around with my kids. Simple is key. Push button on game machine, it comes on, play game. Not push button on porn and meme machine, it comes on, you go to this program, you log in to this, you do that, you switch inputs for 2 controllers, you change output to the TV, then you play game.

I stand by earlier recommendation. I bought a PS3 and got the RLOD. Probably didn't have it a year. I talked to customer service and they said spending $600 for a gaming system for a year was normal. Never bought another.

I had a lot of good times on the PS2. I don't think you can go wrong. If you're cool with the violence, Metal Gear was cool. Right now, I'm playing the OG NES. I love adventure games so I'm playing Final Fantasy 1 all over again. I've even got little man into it.

Yeah playing Super Contra on original NES with the kiddos is what has prompted this thought. :D
