The Garden Thread

Added some free mulch to the garden today to cut down on erosion and muddy shoes. Probably will add another few bags to the hills in the next week. I've re potted all my squash, zucchini and cucumbers. Other plants are coming along nicely in the grow pots. Still need to get my tractor implements here and that will probably mean an expansion in the future.

This year realized its been 5 years since we had a garden when I was going through some stuff and found my old seeds. Decided to change that and ordered a tractor 3 point tiller.
Game changer for sure
Got the first stuff planted tonight although its probably a little late. Onions, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Can't find the potatoes I want but wife is going to get chicks tomorrow so hopefully she can find them for me.
Finished up the trellis for the grape vines and the temp one for blackberries decided I need some more blueberry bushes and another apple tree, another cherry tree and a couple peach and pear trees, and our great aunts just brought us an old timey plum tree (whatever that means)
Then gotta finish planting the garden in about a month

I have found the hardest part of a garden is keeping the deer out. Good luck on a plentiful harvest.

Until you plant that garden lol. Or bunnies but a can on a 22 works wonders and your dog will love you for the fresh rabbit snacks.
Yeah rabbits and ground hogs will be the issues but dogs stay outside alot and keep the yard clear. But I do have a couple surpressed 22s to take care of what they can't

A good size to start. Shallow plowed.

First top soil and peat layer done. Then a foundational Ca-SiO2-P-C and small N layer. Innoculate with biology and final. Then top soil layer. Sprout the rows then cover crop between.

I am gonna start an area of Hugelkulture in my garden this year as a test over the next couple of seasons. If nothing else it'll add some organic matter but supposedly has a lot of benefits.

Oh boy what a treat to find this thread!
Wife has been wanting a garden ever since we bought the house; originally she just wanted a couple of raised beds for small stuff, but I took a long hard look at my massive pile of free lumber and told her I'll handle it.
The plan is three beds in sort of a terrace-type deal; the yard is extremely sloped where we wanted to put it so I had to do some figuring on how to keep the frame of the bed level.

It looks like hell right now because of the boards being dirty, but it's all good lumber.

I cut a handful of 4x4s to create the support for the low side, it looks better than I thought but what a pain in the ass!
Hoping to get the first bed framed in and get the sides cut and installed, and the other two frames roughed in before the crummy weather moves in. We will see how that goes.

My suggestion is to burn/char the outsides of those boards before final placement. They will last alot longer with ground contact.
That's the plan; I was gonna use a ground contact coating but I was worried about contamination since 2 of these will technically be food plots. I've been using my little propane torch to burn the spots touching the ground, and once everything is together it'll all get a going over
