cj tub removal

The body mount bolts are usually bad to be rusted and then break off. The nut plates that the bolts go into will break free and spin also. If that happens you will have to cut access holes in the top of the tub to get to them. That is the worst part. It should be a pretty straight forward deal. Try to get to every bolt you can and hit with some pb blaster or good penetrating oil.

if you have hard/soft doors the latch mechanism will probably be different on the 78 tub. also the 78 will have rear side marker/turn signal lights while the 85 will be wired up with the rear turn signals integrated into the stop light assembly. i am not 100% sure but the fuel tank filler hose may also need to be adjusted. hope some of this helps

He will be fine he bought hard doors from me, 76-79 style doors

The fuel filler cutout should be the same from 78-86, a rectangle with ~1" rounded corners.

The 79 rollbar sits completely on the fenderwells, the later models B-pillar bar is just in front of the fenderwells, all the way to the floor. I'm not sure if the fenderwell holes line up, never thought to check it out.

An other area to compare is the tranny tunnel cover/cutout, I think they were different. The 78 had a D20, 85 was a D300. The transmissions were different too

Check the hole for the bulkhead connector. I bet the 78 has the glass cylinder fuses while the 80s has the blades, not sure if the connector changed shape.

Good time to do the blazer heater motor upgrade, it requires a slightly larger hole in the tub.

I went from an 85 tub to a 78 tub, none of this was an issue, so he should be good. IIRC the biggest issue was the door jam support isn't there on the early modles, but was an easy fix.

i took one off that was totally rusted and all the nuts in the tub had broken loose. I didn't bother with access holes. I just took a sawzall and cut the bolt
