Is it illegal to remove this? Will I be able to pass inspection without it?

you'll fail if they look for it, most probably won't notice

if it came with it , it is supposed to have it..

but a lot of the time depends on inspector

Just tried to get my 05 Tahoe inspecting this past weekend. The third brakelight was burnt out, did not pass. Have 30 days to take it back to that inspector to only have to pay for the sticker. I already paid for the inspection itself. The bad part is the third brake light is an LED unit and the replacment from the dealer was $185. I found one online for $156. Now I am waiting for it to get here. What a PITA!!!!
