Not any more it's not. It's been a coin flip for us to go I-40 or 77 to 81 (also the way we went for the Windrock race) but because of the time we'd be passing through ~ 10:30pm we thought we'd give a shot.

No way. Rough ass I-40 through Statesville, traffic/accidents in the Gorge, Asheville traffic, FTS.
I-81 south of the 77 split is smooth as glass, mostly flat, no traffic... and with the minor exception of Fancy Gap (which I pulled at 60-65mph from a standing start), no real hills at all on that entire stretch. Every once in a while there might be an accident, but you can get off on 11 or 52 and go around.
