Some of you may have seen the invite to ride in iron station at Scott's private rock garden. The premise is to have a good s story for the 4x4 community on the news. I will be attending this with my wife in an attempt to help show the family side of the sport.

I was under the impression this story was about 4x4 and not an advertisement but the rep in charge has asked me to remove the winch because it's not a Warn brand and doesn't want to give someone else free publicity. I offered to install his winch of given to me but they would rather me have none than my milemarker.

This sport is turning into something way to commercial.

just do what they do on other shows and put some blue painters tape over the name and show up and laugh

TURNING INTO?..... LOL
Yes. 12 years ago when I got into it (got a drivers license IOW) it was about late nights building whatever you had, driving all the way to tellico to camp out for a few days, fixing broken parts, breaking more parts... Nobody cared if you had some bling bling crap. What was important was that you were there.

HAHAHA Your'e telling me. I still remember telling people about URE when I first went. They looked at me like it was some kind of mystical land in Mordor. Like you said, your ride was pieced and built, now you can buy it pretty much all off the shelf.

or leave it on and tell 'em to kiss it.... thats what editors get paid for

I'm going to go with the blue tape method. I will take it off to bolt a Warn on, but I won't be giving it back!

That's a total dick move on the rep's part. That'd be like telling everyone they had to drive a certain make of vehicle.

What's his number? I'll call him :D :smokin:

This was my life for years. I'd stay up all night on Friday slapping some crap together just so I could wheel it. Get there and blow up half way through the day and spend the res of the time trying to figure out a fix. I loved those days. Maybe not the breaking down part but just the fun and trail riding somewhere where you had to be on your game to make it.

As for the OP, I see where you're coming from. I'd blue tape it and have fun. If they turn you away I'm sure your brethren will stand up for you or at least I hope they would.

Well, in the end no rep showed, just the local news crew from WCCB. I think there was only 1 warn winch the bunch anyway. My wife did her part to show the warn armor though!

I made it & as long as you got the thread going, I'll post here. Nice to see & met the guys & girls that came out, to support our hobbies. I too, had a pm, re-questioning the cover-up of other brand winches. I was bothered by it, but Did comply.
Too bad the Warn advertisement man, doesn't know What the Warn East Coast Rep, is doing, as No one should up. We had a great time, most all, including me, ran the Amazing Rock Garden, then the ones that could stay, had a Cookout. Our Gracious host, of course, Scott Schwabe! Thanks for a great day off Work, Scott! Looking forward to the News video! Chris Ayers, got to be the Main"Character", & I think is head swelled a little! The female reporter had a Lot, to do with that!:D

I see lots of Warn hate in this thread, but how many other brands (winch or otherwise) have worked with the local news to get positive PR for the 4x4 community? Yes, I'm a little incensed by the request, but put yourself in their shoes. Would you want to be giving positive PR to your competitors?

I agree. I can see where they're coming from and that's why I suggested what I did. I wouldn't go through the hassle of taking it off but I'd cover it up. Everyone's going to know what you have anyway.

Did they only care about winches? What about armor, etc.... If they were worried about promoting their stuff they should have been handing out piles of stickers or something for ya'll to slap on your windows. Everybody likes stickers, and you can bet a good Warn sticker increase pulling capacity by at least 1000 Lbs.......:D

I have no hate for Warn, it just bites me the wrong way when you ask for something and not give anything in return. Like stated, throw a pile or stickers in the mail, or better yet hand out a couple winch covers, or some trash bags with warn on them for litter pick up, then it really looks legit. As far as the news story goes, it had nothing to do with the real message of Tread Lightly or the good programs that "we" do and all about 2 reporters going on a fun ride. I had a great time, met some new friends and a couple of contacts but I would not call this any more than a silly segment. I did however e mail Derrick James and ask him to mention some of the principals of responsible wheeling and mentioned Rock Corp and the toy drive later this month as well as some of the other benefits they have raised money for.

On the "Warn" subject, I only overheard a generalized story. Seems somehow a Warn Ad. man got wind of the TV coverage, & thought it would be good to meet the same Group, to promote their winches, & possibly do some of their Own filming, on a recovery. He would have had to set this up with the East Coast Rep. As we know, this never matured, regardless of what or how it happened. Not Warn's fault, but more like the old saying, " the left hand, didn't know what the right hand was doing". Seems like any Rant, should be directed to the person that Thought he could pull this off, & also asked up to cover non-Warn brands.
Going back to the Original Thread, > Legal places to Wheel [or close to that], WCCB only wanted to do a Short segment of "entertainment". Against the Best advice, they turned down Uwharrie, due to the fact they only had a couple hours to devote to the segment. It really had Nothing to do with Tread Lightly, Responsible Riding, or Legal Places. Just a "Fun" segment, to fill 5 - 7 minutes of Air time! Can't speak for "WE", but I, got excited over nothing, as TV Camera's will do that to you. But "WE" had a Good Time!:)
