Good looking truck. I like that model year better than the one that replaced it.

yeah me too. i've always liked these body styles, especially the extended cabs with the factory running boards they look really good. i like it. just have to redo all the rear brakes and brake booster and it should be ready to go anywhere. i gotta admit, i can't wait to tow the trailer and jeep with this thing...i gotta feeling i won't even hardly notice it back there as far as power goes cause DAIIAMM this thing freaking hauls ass and that's with me shifting like a grandma lol.

Awesome work. Glad you saved it from the scrap yard. Hate to see stuff like that given up on.
thank you. 3 weeks of lots of frustration hunting down stuff, hours and hours of internet searching for diagrams and such and finally to drive it around a little today and feel pretty good about it, it was/is worth the time and money ive dropped into it...sitting at around 1700 into it right now..probably be in right at 2000 with rear brakes, brake booster and maybe power steering pump oh and blower motor but it will be very solid and reliable when all done though.

I'm impressed, but not surprised. I'd hire you in a heart beat for your hard work ethic if I didn't think you were half bat shit crazy.

But we're all fucked up in our own special way. I just happen to be the only normal person I've ever met.

well i drove it some more today not far but around here and WHAT THE HELL...I'm going crazy or just plain dumb with this coolant issue on this ford:
NO MATTER what i do, i can't get it to i guess burp out all the air??? what I mean is from the moment i put it together and added coolant, i let it run and you know till it burps the air bubbles out and then thermostat opens and spits some out then you add fluid and put the cap on and let it run for while and all is good...Top radiator hose remains normal and semi soft. NOW, everytime i crank it up after it cools down for days now it builds up pressure like it's got air trapped in it...i know this cause the top radiator hose gets REALLY hard and feels really pressurized...someone please tell me if this is just ford 5.8 normal or not. I'm used to Jeeps and top hose stays soft enough to pinch when hot and running but this truck doesn't unless i start it with cap off, wait till thermostat opens, then put cap on and it will be good rest of time running. Today i loaded up bunch of trash in it and drive it roughly good half hour and doesn't run hot but when i got home, popped the hood and sure enough the upper hose feels like it could burst at any moment. It's getting frustrating and i've changed the thermostat twice so i know it's not that but this is really just plain stupid (simple stupid lol). Any advise on what I'm missing or doing wrong? thank you

props for taking on such a project.
it's been a hell of journey i admit but i'm starting to like it now and soon as i get these last few quirks out of the way, i will love it. boy i guess i'm still pretty young cause Sunday i manhandled that 8ft bed onto it myself and DAIAMM...i felt pretty good about that lol.

If its not running hot or bubbling/pushing coolant into the overflow bottle. It sounds like it's normal to me.

well i'm just making sure lol since I'm not familiar with these i hate to screw up new heads/radiator/intake so i just making sure. do you know for sure that it's ok for the upper hose to be under so much pressure or "stiff" like it's gonna burst ...

If you are concerned about an air pocket, think about creating an escape for the air.
With the engine cold, remove a hose or coolant sensor in the intake or thermostat housing. Then top off the coolant until only coolant runs out of the open port. Voila, it's bled.

On a 4.0 Jeep you do this by removing the heater hose at the thermostat housing while adding coolant.

You can also drill a 1/16" hole in a new thermostat if it doesn't have the little air bleed check ball

so am i understanding that IT SHOULD NOT be really hard to squeeze/pressurized??? meaning that it is a problem and on any longer drives it would eventually blow/pop something?

meaning

funny you say this cause i don't think hardly any thermostat i ever buy for jeeps or most other cars have this hole anymore lol..i thought it was just a old school thing and they done away with it....if i can't get it to work, i guess i will take the darn thing out a 3rd time and do this to it (this little crap frustrates me more than anything else)

A properly working cooling system should be under pressure. For every psi of pressure you raise the boiling point by 3 degrees. The 13-16 psi pressure along with the higher boiling point of the antifreeze itself moves the boiling point from 212 of plain water and just above the operating temp to something like 270*. When you crank up cold with no pressure as the temp comes up the coolant wants to expand. That expansion in a closed system means the pressure rises. If you bleed the pressure off the boiling point will drop by 20-30 degrees so you lose overheat reserve basically because it can boil sooner and steam won't cool the engine down.

In other words yes there should be pressure on the hoses.

good wording sir. i know there should be some pressure on every radiator hose but when i say pressurized upper hose, i mean PRESSURIZED upper hose..lol the kind that will and almost always does follow with a boom/bang/sploosh

I just drove my crawler truggy (the one in my profile pic) home 10 miles from work. I popped the hood and can barely put a dent in my upper hose squeezing as hard as I can. I ran the a/c and it never got over 200* but the hose is hard. I have a 13psi cap on the plastic tank radiator. The hose literally barely dents maybe 1/8" deflection under my fingers. I still say if it doesn't run hot on the gauge and you don't hear it bubbling into the overflow container it'll be OK. Every time I've seen a cooling system with an air pocket it would peg the gauge after a little bit of driving.

well then.. i guess i feel much better since you told me this...that is exactly what mine feels like is about 1/8" squeeze and that's it and feel pretty hard like you said...again, i'm so used to jeeps lol. the only bad part to me choosing to stick with mostly one vehicle all these years is i don't have enough general knowledge of some of the simple things on other cars like this issue here. well, i guess i'll just take it on little longer drive later this week and keep an eye on the gauge and stuff.
Am i correct to assume that IF..IF there is a problem with it that eventually it will run hot and/or start to bubble in the overflow tank otherwise i would be good? thank you Tim and others for your help.

Glad you got it together. I was worried how this thread would end up. Good work.

thank you very much. It wasn't that much fun i admit, but good learning experience.
Well all the hard work payed off today....Truck Sold for $4200.00, listed for 4500 OBO was gonna get full price but still needed a few little things so i let it go for that. I put just shy of 1700 into it and banked 4200 so i'm pretty happy with the hard work and aggrevation it was putting back together. I drove it a little while over the weekend and wow, that thing was a BEAST i must say. No emission crap, no egr, custom dual exhaust, customized the intake and with the new 5.8 heads and such, that thing had some balls and the guy who bought it was pretty impressed himself being on 33s how powerful it ran. Tranny shifted very very smooth, brakes were kick ass after all new lines and all new hardware front to back!! it was a very good investment to say the least. (Apparently these are popular trucks or just mine lol cause of all the calls and very HIGH interest in it...Price?? amount of work done??? IDK but listed it friday night and by today at lunch, 5 people were on their way and 2 were almost bidding over it...i actually had a difficult time making decision whom to give it to, in the end though it worked out but i just couldn't believe the interest in it.)

I may be wrong, but I was under the assumption you were fixing the truck up for YOURSELF and not to sell. I bet others had the same impression as well and that was reflected in their willingness to donate or discount parts.
Just thinking out loud...

Save for capital gains on this one....

Thought this was going to be your tow rig?

it was but last minute decision thought out last week and really hated to see such a project and reliable truck/work horse just sit and collect yard dust being used only every so often to tow my jeep. several customers were mentioning i should sell as they thought it would sell quick and good and they were right and after talking over with the wife, we needed the money more than the truck and also, this is just kinda what i do...i buy stuff, fix it up, sell it and that is how i make significant amount of money for the family, the home, and my shop tools and such. i really was exited about the truck but in the end, i just can't keep something that i hardly use laying around the yard looking good but going to waste. i listed it to see what would happen and to my surprise, it was very popular and has blessed me tremendously.
I don't want to stir anything but if people were willing to only sell me stuff just because they thought i was keeping it and not selling it, i'm sorry to offend or anger anyone in that area but to me, that shouldn't have anything to do with someone being a good person and willing to help someone with fair/reasonable/or awesome prices. I would give/sell anything to anyone for whatever I choose or give away no matter what that person chooses to do with it but if others don't feel and share the same thought, i apologize for stepping on anyone's toes, offending them, angering them, or seeming to be using anyone. None of such things were by any means ever a part of my thought or agenda and I hope nobody feels that way. Thank You to ALL very much for any and all help with parts and advise to get this project put together!!!

you guys have to realize as i have by now that i have realized from much thought that i don't require a "tow rig" like the rest here do because well, obviously i don't wheel and have the luxury/ability to go places like others do so towards the end of the project, i realized it's really a waste for me to have such a truck just sit to be only used so randomly. I wish i had the use of such a truck but in all reality for my life and current situation, i don't so i will just get me another tahoe hopefully as i have had many and that will do me plenty for my once in awhile towing but get much more use for our family outings we do.
