A friend has a "99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo L6 4.0l that has all sorts of electrical gremlins. Dash lights, guages, dome light...etc..sometimes work and sometimes don't. Doesn't have any blown fuses. Dealer says it's probably the Body Control Module. They want $900 to replace it. I showed him a link to AAP online w/ a reman. BCM for $349.99 - but now they are telling him that they have to have it to "program" it. I know nothing about Cherokees or BCM's. Is this B.S. about having to program the computer? Can we just buy the advance BCM and hook it up?

Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated!

First question?

he has checked all the regular items.. like battery connections, connections behind dash.. it is very common for dash guages on XJ's to stop workign then start working , etc.

also I have found that the little door agar button can cause issues with the dome light.. have him put somthing on the door agar button and see if it stays off all the time..

after checking those items.. if he still has issue then go for the larger items..

as for just buying and swapping in I am sorry to say do not know the answer

Well, I know he put a new battery in it about a year ago. It had the electrical problems before it went bad and still has them. That's a good point - we could check the connections behind the guages, at the BCM, and the door switches. Is the dash fairly easy to take apart? (I told him to get a repair manual if were going to be working on it)

Anybody know if the BCM is bad if the new one has to be programmed?

if I remember correct. yo have to take out the center park of dash where radio is then you can take out dash with a few screws and some plastic snaps.. the instrument cluter is one solid unit.. that comes out and the wire connectors are behind it.. if he takes it out have him clean the connectors and put some electrical grease in it before he puts it back together..
