I really enjoy this show, and "think" I would love to live this way. How many out there watch it and think they could give up all the modern luxuries to live a homesteaders life?
It looks like it'd be fun to do for a summer. Then, back home .
I like the show too, and feel like I'm learning a lot watching it. Unfortunately just like all reality shows these days though I really wonder how much of it is real vs seriously exaggerated.
What season is the show on? Usually shows like that are really good the first season, still decent the second season but with spatterings of made-for-tv drama, and by the third season it's nothing more than scripted drama that happens to take place in the same place as the previous two seasons..
As for the premise of the show, I am 100% certain I could/would do it, but I'm not ready to leave my wife, so I'll stay here haha!
LOL I heard that!!! I think they are on there second season and yes you can tell they're already scripting it to make it more dramatic. The wife and I are in the process of looking for/buying a house and are making compromises... she wants to be close to work, I want to feel like I'm in the middle of nowhere. Alaska is definitely out of the question lol
I love the show & the "idea" of living like that. I don't think I would make it though with my back & hip problems. Also my wife & kids would probably hate it!
Me and my wife have seriously talked about. I love the show and would love to live like that. But we have a kid on the way now so theres more important things to think about now. Although I do try to be more self reliant, and I plan to take a hug step towards that this spring. I get the magazine The New Pioneer and its about people like that and what they do to make money and feed the family. Has a lot about alternate energy, water gardening log homes etc. Not tree huggin yuppie kinda things, but back to the land kinda things
I think the show is great. I record all of them to make sure I don't miss them. I will have to check out the New Pioneer mag. It sounds interesting. I know my wife would not go for much of a change though.
X2 on the New Pioneer Mag, sounds like a good read. I cant wait to get out of this rental house and into our own home so I can start another garden this spring. I've also got plans for a chicken run and greenhouse.
My mom is from Alaska so maybe that's why I long to go and live that life. However like others stated, my fiancé would not have it. Alternatively though we plan to buy 10+ acres, so I can still be more self reliant and enjoy a similar lifestyle while still having the security of a nearby Wally World when I'm lazy or just plain suck at pioneer life.
Yea the mag is interesting. YOu would be amazed at some of the cash crops people grow. For example, a family in there makes a living off of growing lavender. But you got to think when I say make a living, they live on the land, and don't have 2013 Duramax's and $20k cattle trailers. Its also got good articles on really getting the best use out of the land like what wood to cut and burn so other trees next to it can grow quicker, that kind of thing.
I dreamed of going to and living off the land in Alaska since my early teens. I bought books on wilderness survival, homesteading, and had a subscription to the Mother Earth News for years. I hunted and fished all the time then and know I could have survived well and had a happy life far from the rat race I live in now, but leaving my family and friends and girlfriends was something I could'nt do........ I still have the books, skills and desire to do it, but I know I'm too old and soft to deal w the weather and isolation w/o some backup and a willing female companion now.
Strangely I had two longtime close friends ask me if I could do this within the past 3 wks. I came clean and said hell no! I think it comes naturally if you're raised that way. I respect and love that way of life. I lived somewhat similar to that from a kids perspective up until I was about 10yrs old.
After gaining awesome friends I love to hangout with, a dream wife and a love for live music and the venues that go with them, there is no way I could leave what I have now.
The fantasy of it all is great. But it goes with the same reason I'll likely never attempt a long through hike. I get bored quick, want companionship, some cold beer and footstomping music
I really like the show but wouldn't want to live like that. Did some Google action, atz or however you spell it is well off from a musical career he had previously and his daughter is jewel. Found that interesting.
From watching the show and looking them up on line it seems most of them leave for at least a short time to establish themselves outside the homestead then return.
That's interesting about Atz, I've never googled them just enjoy the show. Im sure if you was brought up in that life but knew of the outside world you'd atleast want to go out and explore it a lil. Kinda makes me respect him a lil more, knowing that he could have stayed in the music world and lived a cush life, but instead choosing to live a tougher one. I was also curious as to how they were able to afford some of the things they have, but now I have a better idea....
I love the show. Met Atz Lee at AJ's steak house in Homer this summer. He plays a great guitar as well. My buddy lives on a homestead about a hour outside of Homer close to their property. It's pretty much a one room shack with no power nor running water. A nice fire place though. I'll post up some pictures. Spent about a month in Homer. It's gorgeous. If you have the chance to visit, GO!
