Another generator thread: Pad mount whole home or portable?

Curious now. What do you have Currently?

I'm guessing something with a Japanese made Honda engine and a Stamford end, or a Onan from when Charles was still alive with a newage end.

My dad still runs his Briggs and Stratton 5000w Lowes special from Fran

I run my harbor freight predator 3500 for 3 days non stop without issues pretty often. hasn't blown up yet, but results may vary. Also I haven't had it but for 6 months or so, so I might be buying new ones every couple years :)

Ok i was half RIGHT.
that's a Japanese made Honda engine.
Pramac was acquired by Generac in 2015. The engineeeing descendant of that same alternator is used in the XD and XG series generac portables..The same ones I referenced being current DOD approved.

Thats a good unit. And should have cost about 1,500 to 2,000 new back then.

I remember when my grandpa bought it and if I remember correctly i think it was $1,699.

He used it many times and I bought it from him a long time ago after he bought his pto driven generator to do his whole house.

Gotcha. So compared to a unit that costs 600 in today's dollars...you got a tank.

I was commenting on the guys talking about spending 1,000 for a portable, an ats and all the components necessary to hook it up.

@Ron what is a ballpark price for a propane powered unit that will run a 400 amp service?

Please hit me up on this tomorrow if I forget to get back to you.
I want to give this a fair response.

Gotcha, it all makes sense now.

Dang maybe I should've kept that old updraft Briggs 4kw. It got replaced with a 7.5 or 8k bs toy built with a stuck valve I didn't fix yet. (Pun intended)

I’m partial to having my generator portable and I’ve had it doing all kinds of diff crap in last two years on job sites especially! When power outages I simply back feed into my breaker through a dryer plug, of course with main power cut off so no linemen die if they aren’t treating all lines as live ones any damn way! I know not legal but I don’t do outlaw shit nowadays so let me live a little...

I wait till barn light comes back on then kill gen unplug my adapter to dryer and flip main breaker back on! Con to stationary gen in floods especially if your gen happens to flood, you lose it and all the other expensive stuff that’s flooded with it portable ya throw in the truck or on the roof and carry on with one less loss!

Rooftop generator plugins are a while other can of worms

Fun fact: I've been on some jobsites lately that are 95% powered by HF Predator generators.
I swear to those preds! y’all look in some of those bobcats they swap those engine with the predator also I’ve run one for two years well over 8-10k hours and still run fine loud but no problems, choke cables are junk but all the cheap craps fixable!

Ok, say I spent 6k on a 22kw Generac backup installed and in 2 years put the house on the market. Would it be something that would recoup some of its cost or zero added value?

If zero, how hard to disconnect and move it to new place?

Ron would know best, but I'm willing to bet that about half of that $6k price is labor and related misc equipment (gas piping, wire, etc) that isn't easy to recoup. Removing things like the transfer switch is difficult/costly (needs utility service shut off, etc), too.

I wouldn't expect it to add anything to the sales price.

My guess is it would add just about zero dollars value. You can buy the transfer switch separate from the generator for about 700 bucks. (On the new house, that's what I did...instead of a package, I got the xfer switch, and installed it when we put the panels and meter base in place. Still need to buy the generator. If I bought all at once, I'd burn up most of the warranty with the generator still sitting in it's crate.)

I'd properly install the transfer switch, propane line, etc....when you move, keep the generator, but buy a new transfer switch for new house. Sell the old house listed as "auto-start generator ready".

IMO it's one of those things that doesn't add to the sales price, but increases the salability overall, which can mean a faster turnover. IOW it's not likely somebody would be willing to may much or any more for the house, but if it's between your house and one without it, it gives a leg up.
That is of course assuming you don't live in an area where having the generator is just a norm.
