Just wondering if there were any overlanders on here? Kinda left the hard core world to be able to see more of the world. Yea cheesy I know. But really just kinda got burnt out having to drive 4 hours or more just to get to a good off road park. Guess it’s just this area. Got an adventure bike couple years ago and it was the most fun I’d had in a long time. After 16000 miles on it going all across the southeast I thought it’d be cool to have a vehicle for the same kind of stuff and be able to go when the weather was not cooperating. Got a mid 90s bronco a couple years ago and have slowly been outfitting it for long range, multi day trips more or less like ultimate adventure type stuff. Idk just trying something new I guess. One day I’d like to go hit Moab and the rubicon and maybe even go back down to Baja. Hopefully one day! Let me know what y’all got and might get a ultimate adventure dreamed up!

DO you have a JK or a toyota, $4K roof top tent ,awning system and another 10K of "kit"? let's not forget a drone and a youtube channel.
You can not be an overlander without!!!

Or you could go camp in the woods out of your vehicle and look like you live in a van down by the river . I prefer the later I have done most of the georgia traverse and plan to hit the daniel boone backcountry byway at some point. My 26 YO cherokee does this just fine.

[shutter] That word just makes me quiver (like Mufasa to the hyena's, or "Hillary" does to Bill)

Been there, Done that, and found the sum-bitch was too big for East coast trails...Hell a 4 door JK with a roof rack is too big for most east coast wheeling :smokin: (right @Tails ) but if you use to do hardcore then you likely already know that. I've seen many a roof/side mounted hi-lifts come off the trail looking like a whales dick (bent) because of just too much on a rig.

In Moab you can certainly get away with all those "Overland" bells and whistles.....hell it's wide open out there

We ran into some ADV riders out in Moab. They were having a blast! But covering 10x the ground we were.
I've been a motorcycle guy since 1979 when I got my first bike (Yamaha MX80G) and had always wanted to do some ADV, but lost the passion a few years ago. I know when I use to do Uwharrie on my YZ450F (do the whole dang park in 2 hrs, rinse and repeat) I use to think "No way in hell I'd be content doing this at 1.6mph" after barreling thru those trails in 3rd like my ass was on fire, but yet here I am doing so. So I guess anything is possible.

But hey, if that's your thing....good on ya! It's just been my experience that fiberglass tops end up cracked (sold mine and went soft top, and STILL ripped that sumbitch on a tree at Golden Mtn), and roof racks and tons of stuff bolted to a body end up BENT here on the east coast

Yep I’d get Chris at U joint off-road to build me one like this

That's absolutely cool as hell, and I can't think of a single trail at ANY of the places I've wheeled in the last 2 years that I could take that, other than the access roads (and a few trails at Moab)

He’s wheeled the flats and other areas around here in his vans but they are large for sure. When I hit the big one you guys will know it cause I’ll be driving one. The one in the pics was a high end frame off build that was probably $100 grand +.

Even though there is no exact definition for overlanding, my thought has always been mild terrain/stuff that has been traveled before/open ground. Logging roads, deserts paths, mining roads, outback type of “stuff”.

Stuff that would be boring and uncomfortable in our Jeeps that we take trail riding.

Yea I figured I’d get made fun of for saying that and that’s ok. But like I said It’s not really about the hard core trails for me anymore. Just like back country exploring and camping and stuff to that effect. Even though it is locked front and rear so I could do some pretty nasty stuff ifin I felt so inclined

Not making fun by any means. I just hate to see people buy into the HYPE associated with that word. Way too many opportunistic people looking to make a dime off promoting unnecessary "Farkles"

See @obullfish Project Sandbox build for (in MY mind) is ideal "Overlanding" equiped

I guess I shouldn’t have used that trigger word. Maybe exploring and camping would have bred more appropriate. I’ve built a few rigs in my day so I’m not really worried about getting suckered in to handing over my credit card and saying make it look like this cause it was in a mag or on a forum.
I’ve got the build part handled. I was just wondering if anyone else did that sort of thing to possibly meet up and go sometime. Tired of always going by myself

Check out Mid Atlantic Overland Society on Facebook, and Expedition Portal , Not nearly as many Overlanders here as out west, but there are still a fair number around here...

I am not an overlander by any means. I was persuaded to attend the Smoky Mountain Overland Rally last year by a family member that was supposed to be a trail guide on the advanced trails. These pussies that paid good $$$ to attend the event and go Wheelin didn’t even hit the trails. All they did for 3 days was push overpriced bolt on shit that serves no purpose other than to say I have a $2000 rooftop tent or a $30,000 glorified pop up camper. I made a big enough ass out of myself and offended the crowd after some drinking took place to guarantee that they wouldn’t want me back this year. My trailer build is to haul gear and eventually allow for easy meal prep. Might even build a smoker into it somehow.

We have an event doing the Georgia Traverse next month. Patriot Therapies founder is big into overland, ie: the four door jk with the roof rack comment. He is getting me more and more into it but I agree the term “overland” is more of a way to make money. I will be selling my 4cyl TJ at the end of the year to start a new build from scratch but with a bigger motor. New build will be gearing up for the trans American trail in 2021 I want more useable storage that is much better strapped down then ratchet straps.

I went up to the cabin on Saturday and passed a couple of groups coming down the mountain, a group of about 15 on the hardtop in Collettsville and another group of about 15 at Curtis Creek bridge, mostly Toyotas, few Jeeps. I stopped at the store and talked with one of the vendors for a few minutes. From pictures I've seen on FBook it looks like they went to Richlands Rd. I didn't take any pictures but there were some sweet rooftop and tow behind camp set ups. Here are some from pictures from FBook.
