if i had it to do over again i woulda set the damn thing on fire on my way out, then yall could really gripe about something instead of guy taking a leaf spring...lol
not really guys, but come one. the thing was left for dead. no one was coming back for that thing, the folks at the outpost said the guys purposley trashed it and intended on leaving it. how true it is i dont know, but its obvious to me, no one was coming back for it.

Man, nobodys saying that. Just saying that just because you assume that doesn't give you the right to take parts of it. That is stealing, clear cut. Now if the forest service said "Feel free to take what you need, its being towed off in the morning" Sure, Jump on it.

View it this way. If the Police (whichever branch) would have rolled up and saw this, and asked if you owned the vehicle, and you said "well no, but it was abandoned so I didnt figure anyone would miss the leaf"

What do you think would happen?

A possible scenario...
So some poor kid flips burgers for three months to save enough cash to buy a Jeep he can take wheelin'. He's young and not too smart so he takes it out alone for a ride in Uwharrie and breaks something. He leaves it on the side of the trail and walks out.

A group of punks decide that it will be funny to bust the windows out of it and steal the tires. Another guy with a broke Jeep decides that he needs a leaf spring so he "borrows" one. He justifies "borrowing" the spring because the glass was busted out and tires were missing.

The next day the kid and his father borrow a truck and trailer to come pick up the Jeep. They get a big surprise. Now all they can do is drag the thing to the crushers because the liability insurance does not cover vandalism and they have no cash to rebuild...

Maybe we should try to find out whose rig was vandalized and see if we can help him out. Just a thought....

Agreed. Was there a license plate on it?

License plate had been removed, but for all we really know, someone stole it. So the "Oh it was abandoned thing doesn't apply. Hell, someone stole my brothers jeep tag out of his apartment parking lot, they mustve been motivated cuz the bolts were impacted in there lol, screwdriver wasn't gonna get it done.

Well when my truck breaks down next time and i have to leave that POS....WHen i come back and its missing leaf springs and its propped up on the gas tank....and one of you posted pics about taking my parts off it and and beat it all your pic is in the posts....Im beatin someones fukn brains out...i dont care if they agree to return it our not ....just my .02$ :shaking:

Are you saying this was yours? or one of those "if this was mine" because its hard to tell.

But yeah, lol whether you give it back or not, vengeance will be swift.
In highschool I had a guy who thought it was funny to steal my spare tire (sat in the rear of the jeep and my hatch didn't lock, had no purpose just one of those "Oh u shoulda seen your face"

2 friends and I came to school on a early release day (let out at 1 pm) we didn't go to school, came in around 10:30 as to avoid the cop who watched the parking lots during lunch time aswell as teachers making lunch runs.

Took his tires/wheels off and put his car on cinder blocks :)

All 4 tires/wheels were sitting in the bed of my truck about 100 yards away, we just sat there and watched his reaction until he picked up his phone, didn't wanna get a charge, went over and let him know what was up, helped him put them back on. But he never touched my tire again. Sometimes violence is fun, but prankage is much better.

In this case, violence would be the answer, or take the value of your damage out of his vehicle...

Tires *check*
leaf spring *check*
windows *check*

Lol

Reverse the situation and say you were in sitting on Slick Rock back in the day at Tellico and broken ... OR BFE Callalantee w/ no hope of getting a tow truck out to you or facing a LONG walk back for parts... I bet some of your attitudes would change...

Not calling you out, but I was stuck @ Tellico (top of School bus) & walked out once, bummed a ride twice, & finally got it out two days later. Two buddies damn near froze by staying over night (because he didn't want his parts yanked from an "abandoned" vehicle) w/ the rig.......stealing is stealing - unless it's life or death.

A lot of people are "stand-up" when they get caught....at the very least, people will think twice before doing something like this.

....if you do pull some chit like this, no pics!!

i see where all of you are coming from and understand what you mean, after thinking about it hard, and talking over it with some buddys this weekend i think your right. it was stealing, bottom line. i know i said i woulda done the same, but i dont know about that now. stealing is stealing.

word of wisdom to the next idiot who "burrows" something like this, i wouldnt post it up on a website....lol

I was there that weekend that broncomania (Mike I think) stayed up there overnight. Wish I would've known what was up. I would have happily helped out.

spinning out of control.... stealing is stealing but Dan is right, lil bit of ingenuity... ratchet straps and block of wood and a few buddies. BUt if you're alone like I am some times in Uwharrie, I pick my lines where that I know I won't have problem. As for leaving a rig, shit I remind non-wheelin people, that all types of folks go wheelin, and that means you might a get a thief out there, a preacher, a cop, a druggie, a 2 time a year wheeler or veteran or whatever.... so in the woods anything goes.

Theres alot been said but IMO I think what makes it the worse is that there were pictures taken and a thread written about it. This makes it the bad situation that it is. I personally would not have taken the parts or messed with the vehicle in any way. Unfortunately we dont all think the same. Its kinda like people who think its ok to just drive their rig anywhere they want and drink beer all over the park. Its up to us to maintain a bit of respect for each other in the wheeling community.

well said my friend!

on another note, that drives me absolutley nuts that people ride around drinking throwing beer cans out on the trail. now i know your not supposed to drink at all in URE, but when im settled in at my camp site for the night i like drink a little, but i always have a trash bag for all my trash. i think they need more rangers out and stricter laws and fines for a**holes that do that.

So what is the difference between taking something off an abandoned vehicle and drinking alcohol knowing its against the law? Its breaking the law just like taking the part is.

nothing really, the law is the law. but i never said i was perfect. me sitting at my campsite minding my own business drinkning a few beers and not acting like a fool dosent bother anyone else. my nights in URE usually involve some good food, some cold beer and a guitar around the camp fire, not out drunk raising hell on the trails endangering others and myself.
is that so wrong?

Not really dirrected at you. Just trying to put a point out there.

i understand. i just think that the drinking law is because of fools who act like that and ruin it for the people that can drink responsibly. i shouldnt break it, but i do. lol

Drinking beer on the trail vs stealing parts that you do not know the origin/owner of... The difference.... Tough one... Oh I know...

Drinking beer responsibly and throwing it away, (assuming u didn't steal the beer) doesn't have the risk of screwing anyone but yourself over, taking parts you don't know the origin/owner of could very well ruin the potential owners day/night/week/month... Now we have determined it was not anyone coming back for it, but he did not know that for fact at the time. Pretty sure 77green knows where his beer came from before he consumes it. Both are wrong, and both illegal. But Id rather catch someone drinking a beer on my property than stealing my leaf spring.

Just saying.

actually i had found my beer at somone elses camp site in a cooler. there was no vehicle there so i assumed it was abandoned.
lol jk jk
but really, you right XJ. drinking beer and stealing the leaf spring are like taking bubble gum and robbing a bank...wayyy different.

Im not saying that exactly, I don't think any crime should be taken lightly. I break my fair share of laws myself, we all do.

Ive also made my fair share of mistakes, Ive done alot of things I regret, some illegal, some just immoral. In the end alot of times I got caught, alot of times I got away with it. I figure Joshua or whatever will view this as a lucky break as I do many of my illegal mistakes I have done in the past.

man i have definitely done things i regret! mostly illegal, lol. and they still cause me problems today. but hey you live and you learn!

this thread can be deleted now. drama seems to be over, lol.
