Just pulled into LaPaz for a taco and internet. All is awesome. Typical Baja trip. They wouldnt let us haul any used tires into Mexico, so every one had to throw thier spares away or turn arround and head back to San Diego to buy new ones. I bribed them for 100 bucks and hauled ass, which is what they were shooting for in the first place. Last year it was the drums of race fuel didnt have the Mexican tax stamp on them. We haul a off road pit trailer into the most remote pit location to set up for Locos Mocos/Baja Pits. It will have 30 mounted tires 30 dump cans, camp equipment, drums of fuel, welder, gen set, etc... on it. We are about to hit the dirt into the race course with 18 pre runners and 2 chase trucks loaded for bear. Last year we pitted 42 Bikes, 18 quads, 39 various trucks/buggies and 19 trophy trucks. This year looks about the same. Ya'll have a great Thanksgiving!

Pics so far, gotta' go!

Got more just dont have time right now, gotta' go.

My work laptop was not happy with all the links I had open today... between CAD and then the tracker, Berne's spot tracker, the PBB chat and other links... the squirrels were angry.

Tom I'm expecting those girl stencils on the doors of your Scout. Have fun.

We had a lot of fun with the Locos Mocos stencils. Her name is Misty, she has her own Facebook page that chronicles her travels. Street signs, trucks, roadside taco stands, all got tagged. I thought about doing a camo wrap with Misty as the pattern. Might be a little racey to leave it in the church parking lot.
Got home a little while ago. Gonna take a few days to relearn english and how to sleep again. I think I have some bruised ribs from a KTM dirt bike that came flying into the hot pit. He forgot the reason he was coming into the pit was the fact he didnt have any brakes. Guy was French Canadian and trying to Iron Man the whole race in his first time out. Sent me flying into the back of Andy McMillan's trophy truck that we were pitting. Must be good luck to slam me into your truck... He won. We got the rider into a chair, fed him a sandwich, bananas and gatorade while we fixed his bike. He took off an hour later heading the wrong way on the race course. We never saw him come back by the pits, I dont think he finished.:shaking: All in all it was a great trip. I cant wait till next year when I take the Scout out for her first Baja trip. It will be a pennisula run that will finish just outside of Cabo. We have our favorite fishing boat reserved already.

Team Shaffer Motorsports / Torchmate Racing brought home a solid 2nd place finish in Class 4 at the 2011 Baja 1000! Missed 1st by just 9 minutes and made up about an hour in the last 100 or so miles.

Berne sucking down the Tecate like a good gringo. ;)

heck ya..

when do you start planning for next year?

I'd love to make that trip....

yeah but its research....

Yeah, we've talked about going every year for the last.... five? It just hasn't happened yet. Scheduling sucks this time of year.

Link to Misty's facebook page?

Yesterday. You dont need to plan, just buy a plane ticket or grab a seat in the tow rig and help drive. If you want to haul your toy out there, I am sure we can find a secure place to park the bus at a race shop.

The whole mindset with Baja is "roll with it". Nothing happens like it is supposed to... Everything that isnt supposed to happen will!

Heres the way I look at Baja... My big butt and I aint ever going to swim the English Channel, Run with the bulls in Spain or climb Mount Everest. But I can say I have survived Baja every year since 2000 and had a very large time doing it. There arent many unspoiled adventures left in the world (In the Hemingway sense of the word). People have resorted to base jumping, racing down hill shopping carts, voting a straight democratic ticket, and other retarded activities to get thier thrills. No class. No History. No investment. I have a group of friends out there that are like no other. Kinda' like when you really come together as a winning team in sports. It is pretty satisfying knowing that each of you is battle tested and that you didnt scream like a girl the first time you flew a 4 thousand pound truck off a blind jump at 80 miles per hour and landed it sideways. When in doubt, throttle it out! If you dont make it, at least the screaming engine will make watching the video that much more awesome!

this pretty well sums it up...
there's an almost endless number of teams that could always use an extra set of hands. Especially since next year is a peninsula run, its gonna be all hands on deck. It'll be a great opportunity to see some of the coolest parts of Baja.....anybody that thinks its just open desolate desert down there is missing most of the point.

Its a last outpost of unspoiled wild west, with some of the most varied and coolest terrain around.....from barren desert, cactus forests, Martian looking rock fields, unspoiled gorgeous beaches, wooded creek beds, and smiling happy people excited to see one of the biggest races of the year come through their little town. Don't forget your steekers!
