I wanted some 'filler' for the back yard and after seeing some at the NC Zoo i located some in the area and transplanted it to my back yard.. Yes im aware it grows and can't be stopped etc.. that why i wanted it !!! Its an otherwise unusable area in my back yard that can get wet at times, and has a drainage easement so i can't do anything back there.. The ditch will keep it from invading my front yard and there are woods to the back that arnt mine :flipoff2:

In a few years you will be really old and you will say to yourself..."Damn why did I plant that!"

If it's a species of bamboo that spreads/runs underground then your ditch will do little to keep it out of the yard. If you want to contain it then bury plastic down to about 3' deep to keep it from running...

If you want something that's good at holding the ground together and will absoutely take over your neighborhood .... go buy some Chinese Privet...

that's like planting kudzu...

people plant Kudzu ? I though it just kinda ...happnend ?

I am in a never ending battle with the stuff in my back yard,

a field full of kudzu, and it keeps trying to take my yard !!

I suspect you are right, the bamboo (cane) will do the same thing.

I checked this variety and it doesn't run very deep, runners only go ~12" deep... Plus when we dug it out the root ball was at most 6-8" deep...

Ya I know I'm stupid for planting it.. :) Ill dig a deeper ditch if need be and or install a barrier..

Kinda funny, Kudzoo is coming across the now unused farm field from the other side, so i figure in a few years it will be here... Well have a bamboo vs kudzoo war...

cut it as it grows too big and make yourself some nice hardwood floors.

there's all sorts of neat uses for it. you can even make wine from the sap.

you can even make wine from the sap.

well when you get enough to build a hut put a pool table in it & I'll be happy to help break in the table & sip some bambo sap wine is it as good as mead??

not sure, i've never had bamboo wine. i have had mead, good stuff. we made some when i took bees & beekeeping at ncsu.

you mean you will not be changing your name to Gilligan:lol:

ooh, i know... you're really growing it to build your next camper!:flipoff2:

let it grow and then sell it on craigslist
haha, i bet you could. i'm sure some of the hippies on there would love it.

We've got some bamboo at my parents farm and that stuff is unstopable if you let it grow. But when the runners get about a foot tall just mow over em and youll never have a problem. If you keep it contained it will make a pretty solid wall that looks really nice.

You can get rid of Bamboo it's just hard I like it. I seen a bumper sticker on the back of my Kentucky neighbors RV that said save a coal miner shot a tree hugger had a pic of a guy hugging a tree in cross hairs. You got to love them mountain boys.
