Budgetary quote for regear...

If you’re willing to drive to Winston and drop it off, Rev Limit Fab will save you some coin. @Chris_Keziah

@Jeffncs pm if you want me to quote it. As far as your traction device selection personally I'd go with a Tru-Trac. That way when you doing burnouts in the ole CJ's you at least look cool with both tires spinning. Any auto locker will be a bit harsh for a ice cream rig.

Wait and find some other axles to swap in with the gears and lockers you want. You’ll probably spend half the money you think you’ll spend getting your stuff regeared.

People are selling 4.10 geared axles all the time.

Hey now, I get paid commission in the form of my own shop time. you stay out of this! :D

Paid shop time? Don’t you have 3 disassembled jeeps and a chebby with more miles than the space shuttle endeavor to tend to? :flipoff2:

Quarantine got them all back together and in great shape lol

I'm not going to volunteer anybody, but I got a quote from one of our vendors to regear F/R for less than your parts budget. Granted, that only included gears, install parts, and labor (no carrier change), and would require me taking the parts to WNC. But he's a good dude, so I'd probably make the drive.

That dude's a hack.

Then i'd probably just stick a lunch box, like a Sparten, in it, & save the coin. But you get what suites your needs!
If this is for going around town for ice cream, I don't recommend a Spartan locker. The 'pop' after going around a corner is likely to roll a scoop of ice cream right off the cone. A TruTrac isn't a bad option. It's not a typical clutch plate LSD. It can handle offroad performance along the lines of what you're looking for.

Been very happy with my TruTrac. I use my Jeep to commute to work, run errands, go on cruises with the family, work around the yard, get fire wood, etc.
I don’t intend to do anything extreme but whenever my broke ass gets the front regeared I will put a spartan in it.

In 2wd, it will be basically invisible. You'll hear it ratchet in turns, but that's all. 4wd will be nearly useless in <6" of snow, though.

Yup. My XJ is welded in the rear, and Spartan up front. It’s dangerous in the snow. Fun, but dangerous. The front stays locked, so it will follow the grade in the road, and slide all over the place. I can drive thru it and counter it 95% of the time. But it can be sketchy.

My TJ was also locked front and rear and I would unlock one of the hubs in the front and it would do a lot better. Never had the YJ in it cause it doesn’t snow here anymore, but I’d be unlocking a hub in it too.

I drove my xj alot in the snow at school with a spartan up front. If it wasnt for the spartan I wouldnt have been able to get out of where I parked because of the hill. I noticed that the back would spin a little getting going on hills but the front would pull. The front didnt slide on the road to me. The xj has alot more wheel base than a wrangler which I have heard is important in the snow. When we got slammed with snow having the front locked was a life saver because i didnt run into the issue of losing traction in the front.

My first Jeep was a CJ 5. Clutch pack in rear, but it was Over packed, so it didn't slip! Turned out of a side street one time, onto the main 2 lane, in a curve & steep off camber. Snow & Ice. The rear did a 180 with me, & I wasn't even on the gas! Just the off camber & locked rear! Front was open.

Updating this thread...

I started saving my nickels and dimes to do the regear and recalled a friend that had a matching front and rear axle assembly for my Jeep. I shot him a text asking if he still has them and to me surprise he did! We agreed on a price and I’ll be pulling my housing for a direct install of his old ones. They’ve been sitting for 2 years, so I’ll drain and refill, but should be completely usable as they sit.

I’m installing a D44 rear and D30 front. 3.73 gears and true tracks in both housings. I’m VERY happy! They’re not 4.10s, but this saved me a ton of money and they’ll be a huge improvement over my open 2.70s!!!

Ill just say.... i have never heard someone say, "man i wish my jeep wasnt geared so high."

Also, i had a TT in my 4runner for years and loved it. You can kinda make it a full locker by applying just enough e brake to pressure both sides and force them to spin together.
