Hey guys just wanting your opinons on putting forward facing cars seats in passenger front seat of jeeps ( yj wrangler in my case) . i read the nc laws about this and if im reading this right , it is not aganist the law to put a car seat in the passenger front seat as long as theres no airbag. just wandering cause i got 2 1/2 year old lil boy that loves to ride in my jeep and wandered about him sitting in the front.whats your take ?

as long as there is no air bag it is legal..

I had my son in old vw all the time.. mainly due to no room in back seat :)

my girl rides in the front seat of my geo and my sami, no airbag, but my excuse is the seat in the rear is less than a foot from the tailgate so i would rather have her upfront w/me in case of an assident:p

scared to death!!!!!

I would not put my little girl in the front seat in a car seat when there was a passenger air bag. Now no front air bag, then maybe so.

i turn it off in my silverado and she never rides in the front of my wifes freestyle it has weight sensor and no way of turning it off, i just feel better with her up front in my cracker boxes and none of them have any type of passive restraints but i do agree they are or could be dangerous if activated in a frontal collision w/a carseat

Isn't the whole point of weight sensors to turn the airbag off or on depending on whether a full-sized person is in there?
In my wife's Mazda, there's a light on the dash that tells you if it has been tripped. Our kids don't trip it.
That said, they still ride in teh back, except in my '93 Toy p/u. the 2 y/o loves riding up there b/c she can see.

thats what it is designed for but it the "passenger airbag off" light goes out when she sits up there, maybe just her 40lbs is concentrated, oh well she's better off in the back the way my wife drives:eek:

scared to death!!!!!

Two things... Based on my reading of the statutes a while back, its only legal if there's no back seat.

Also, I don't buy the weight thing with a car seat. Booster, maybe. But to "properly" install the car seat according to the instructions, I'm supposed to put my weight down on it and cinch it as tight as it will go. So as far as the car knows, whatever is in that seat weighs 180-200#, etc.

Wrangler is easy, remove back seat and you habe no choice but the front as far as legality.

Many of the newer cars use strain sensors that replace the mounting bolts the fasten the seat to the floor, so once your weight is off, it's off. Although with some systems using the pressure bladder in the seat cushion I can see your logic.

And there are certain instances where backseats are not suitable for use. You cannot put a car seat in the rear of any small trucks with the sideways back seats for example. There are also several more situations that justify using the front seat, such as a medical condition where the child needs constant monitoring, etc.

My wife isn't heavy enough to activate several passenger side airbags

What Shawn said. If you properly install the child seat, you will get in it and bounce while tightening the seatbelt. My daughter's seat in the back of my car is so freakin tight that it dosent move at all.

Think about the safety of your kids. My daughter will be rear facing in the back seat until she is physically not able to fit in there anymore (or hits the weight limit of the seat).

My wife's Mazda has permanent indentations where our daughter's rear-facing car seat was clamped down super-tight for so long.

It shouldn't matter. The seatbelt is still bolted to the floor, the seat is cinched down hard with the seat belt, so a strain gauge in the floor still sees the "weight" generated by the springs in the seat.

The seat belt is typically bolted to the seat frame in many newer vehicles, not the floor, no force is transferred to the floor or the strain gauges through the seatbelts. Although some still go all the way to the floor, most older vehicles were that way.

I've got my boy's car seat in the middle seat of the 2nd row in my van. I've got it cinched down very tight too. I figure he is safest in the middle of the vehicle from either a front end, rear end, or T-bone style accident. I kept him rear facing until his legs got too long.

So.... why don't we all ride in the middle of the back of the car, facing backwards?
I mean clearly that would be safer to design cars that way.

Drive by mirrors? That would eliminate the female driver factor...
