Don't ever, ever, ever think for even one damned second that because you have a copy of something on a CD-R or DVD-R that it is "backed up".

Before anybody asks, no, I didn't lose anything except my Sunday afternoon.

They are temporary storage. I've seen flash drives fail also. The only real backup solution is multiple backups.
The only real backup is having it written on paper.

Except that a lot of people think that having one copy on a hard drive and a second copy on a DVD-R constitutes having multiple copies.

Make multiple copies on magnetic media. Keep one of them off-site.

Ahh the good old days of disaster recovery classes... add a hot site was always the answer if I remember correctly :)

people think I am nuts with my 4 copies of all files on CD's and my SAN file storage, then my backup to disc array , then off to Tapes..

I am pretty sure I can get whatever gets lost :)
