Cheap Truck Challenge???

Here are a couple pics of the 89 XJ my buddy and I are hoping to compete with. Been sitting since 2005, was driven to where it was parked. Top of the line 89 model, leather interior, sunroof, gold emblems & wheels, etc. All for the bargain price of $200. Now we just need to get it running and start getting it race prepped.

Where it sat since 2005

Just got it to the shop

That's a good start you've got there, Untchabl!

In answer to the spectators question; Spectators will be allowed.

I expect more competitors will complete the challenge than not and that the attrition rate will be in the 35 to 40% range.

When you dangle a carrot and a watch in front of wheelers...watch out.

Id lay money on those numbers without seeing the course

I would even say thats a lower number than that will finish.

Especially if you don't really advertise the type of clearance/WB needed to make it (as mentioned above...)

Humm, I can take that back to the board to see if they'd like to clarify it more, But it does state in the rules that the course will be laid out over Blue and Low Black trails, while it states in the thread starter (though not in the actual Cheap Truck Challenge portion) that the minimum requirements for low black are;

- 35" tires
- Front and rear lockers
- Tow points front and rear of vehicle
- Rocker protection and
skid plates
recommended
Now, as I said, I've been over all the possible routes in an open/open TJ on 33"s, and a LWB Truck at stock height on 33's might make it with a very skilled driver, (But I doubt it), So I'm glad you asked before actually bringing it out, and the board may make an announcement to clarify what we expect.

All I'm sayin' is that you're probably gonna get people who overestimate their $500 vehicles and their own superhero-like driving prowess

see you got it moved get it running yet John???

No Cliff, haven't got it running yet. Just rammed the rear corner of the bumper with the 2dr to push it off the trailer. LOL Definitely something with the fuel pump, can't hear it turn on and no fuel at the rail. Haven't diagnosed it any farther than that yet. Could be simply a fuel pump relay (doubt it with my luck) or the actual pump is bad.

You will also get a lot of people who underestimate their $500 rigs too.

People are obviously going to bring out rigs that aren't perfectly suited to rock crawling and trail-riding, but that's the point. At the 24 hour of Lemons challenges (kind of a model for this challenge) they have guys in minivans and ford rangers racing around a road-racing track. Obviously not the machine for the job, but it works (kinda) and they have a ton of fun doing it. Half the fun of those cars is the ridiculous themes and costumes the contestants wear.

I almost had my hands on a 1972 Dodge 4x4 truck, rusted to oblivion; someone snapped it up before me. Would it have been as good as a cheap XJ? Hell no. Would it have been more fun? Hell yeah!

well here is my virgin for the sacrifice!!!
already lost front bumper in previous "incident" haha!!!!
hope i dont scratch it i borrowed it from my Grammy!!

I will say with those requirements. I think theres a big difference in where a truck can go when someone is trail riding slow and when someone hits it at speed lol. Also when someone doesn't care about the body will make a huge difference.

This guy gets it--momentum and disregard for sheetmetal is the equalizer here. Part of the appeal of the CCTC is seeing what less than ideal rigs are capable of doing when pushed a little. As noted, there will definitely be some drivetrain carnage and I for one will be really dissapointed if everyone finishes--but I seriously doubt that will happen!

We're seeing a good amount of interest in the event--Should be a great time.

Here's my CCTC XJ build if anyone's interested: http://rcpfa.com/showthread.php?2921-CCTC-quot-Spec-quot-XJ-build

Right and momentum and disregard for sheetmetal results in carnage/breakage.
It took 3 years for ECORS to see 40% completion rates in A class which is your min requirement. May of these rigs have 5 figures invested not 3.
I would love to be there, I just hope you have plans for extraction or things will get clogged.

Also final point, encouraging "pushing the limits" encourages stupidity....and stupidity encourages injuries. Consider requiring more safety gear, please. I really dont wnat to lose any more friends.

I took my Rubicon through the course that we are doing when it was stock. I took it slow and had no body damage. If I was hauling ass bouncing off rocks, I would have messed the body up, perhaps drive-train, but I wouldn't have been at risk for injury. There is virtually no potential for rollover or serious incidents. When we say "pushing the limits" we mean the limits of the rusty junk, not the safety standards.

Ron-thanks for your input on this. I did acknowledge the likelihood of breakage in my post. I don't think a 60% attrition rate is out of the question but as you found, there's no way to know until you try.

Although we're not intending CCTC to be ECORS for beaters there are some areas worth comparing. I'd love to discuss some of the safety aspects in particular. Our safety requirements seem very similar to your A Class rules. I sent you a PM on here regarding this.

Thanks again, and thanks for your efforts with ECORS.

Hey man I really think this is a good Idea but coming from racing ECORS myself I think this will turn into an ECORS race. You put a bunch of guys in cheap beaters and say who can finish the first and fastest people will show you lol. For the 1500 there will be a lot of attrition but it will be a fun race thats for sure. I haven't looked at your saftey standards but I hope they include at least helmets and firesuits. Ideally i think it should be some form of harnesses and Cage but thats my opinion.

Cage, harnesses and fire suits would keep me from competing. Keyword in this event is Cheap and none of those items are cheap. Yes, I value my safety but I don't see these items being necessary for this event. In the end, it's up to the organizers but if cage, fire suits, etc become required I'll just haul the XJ I bought on to the scrap yard.

Dude at the least get a fire suit and a helmet. Fires suits are available cheap and will save you. I can see you saying cage is out of your price range and thats your choice.

X2. And the fire suit you can keep for later use even after the jeep is Gone ;-)

Note, roll cages/safety equipment do NOT count against the "value" figure, good call on their part to keep from discouraging these.
