Ok, so I'm new to all of this and am about to lift my TJ. I putting a 4" Rough Country lift on it, and I was told that I would need a bigger rear end to support it. They suggested an 8.8 ford. Can someone give me any advice on this?!?!?!

you will only need a biger rear axle if you put bigger tires on it..

also what rear axle do you have now? a dana 44 or a dana 35?

and a 35 can hold up to street driving with a larger tire as long as it is not to big.. but if you start to wheel it or put a locker, etc in it you may start to break axles.

I would not go bigger then a 33" on a dana 35 rear axle

Well, I have 33 on it now, but I wouldn't mind to go up to 35s. I have the dana 35 in it now. But the general concensus is the lift is ok, but bigger tires, get the 8.8? By the way, I REALLY appreciate people helping me out with this! Is the dana 44 a better choice?

8.8

8.8 is what you want if you're keeping the D30 front but want to get rid of the Turdy5.

Same bolt pattern as your D35 (5 on 4.5" IIRC)
Stronger than a D44
Factory Disc Brakes

Thanks for all the info. The Jeep is still gonna be my daily driver for the next 6 months to a year, then HOPEFULLY it will just be my toy. I'm going to give it hell off road though, and I want to try to keep a happy medium between driving around on the road and off road.

daily driver... I'm going to give it hell off road though, and I want to try to keep a happy medium between driving around on the road and off road.

These 2 are usually mutually exclusive.
I would either swap in the 8.8, find a 44, or swap in a set of Rubicon axles.

do the 8.8 swap. this is the best option, you get disks and they hold up well to sustained punishment. Have you already bought you ROUGH country lift?? if not I suggest looking a little deeper at the TJ offerings from other companies. there are alot of options out there that you would be a lot happier with.

the rubicon express kits work well and ride great on the street. as do the teraflex, and full traction. all these will shine offroad. there are many other options, give us a call tomorrow at the shop and one of my salesman will be happy to discuss different options, price and features. take your time here and carefully evaluate what you want to use the jeep for. this is the time to spend wisely on your jeep.

Give us a call and we can give you a nickels worth of free advise. Or better yet, if can make it up to the store stop and by and I can take a look at it and further advise some options.
