Credit Card Fraud, Again.

If you pay it off every month, the credit card is free. The reward program is money on top.

Yep. I found an Amex that pays 6% back at the grocery store and 3% on fuel, 1% on everything else and a MC that is 2% across the board. Just makes sense.

What MC pays 2% across the board? Will have to look into that. Most seem to be higher % is some area but only 1% on everything else.

I would seriously deeep scan your computer and make certain you don't have any spyware or keyloggers letting someone repeatedly steal your cc. That is incredibly frequent

One of the times was the Target thing where tons of people got hit. For most computer activities I actually have a locked down a "user" profile on XP that cannot install anything as it has no Admin rights. My card literally gets dozens of transactions per month so statistically it is probably "normal". It is less than once per year but not by much.

I knew that was coming...yeah when I feel like spending $$ on a new computer and not on my truck. For browsing the internet this works fine, and that's all I really do with a home computer. I ran Win98 until the machine it was on finally crapped out totally around 2008, then got this one, which was a new HP Business Class machine without all the bull crap factory installed software. I have noticed in the last six months or so that it is starting to have issues rendering some of the video and animated BS on some websites, which is stupid annoying (the web sites, not the computer). It may be close to being time. You'd laugh at my monitor as well; it's a 17" IBM branded Sony Trinitron CRT. Vertically-flat only but crisp as the day I bought it in 1998. 4:3 which makes viewing poorly written websites a pain sometimes but it supports really high resolutions and refresh rates so it still works fine in my book...

I prefer the old 4:3 to widescreen. And I've got my Win7 work computer setup for WinXP display with the old style tabs at the bottom. I hate all the poppy flashy wooshy stuff.

Yup. I started doing the same about 3 years ago when I moved to Durham. I did get flagged a few times once I started traveling more for work and used my personal card for things that weren't covered on my per-diem, but I'd rather have them call me and check than some asshat compromise my card.
I was poking around on one of my CC websites, and saw some sort of travel-notification setting. You could enter some dates and location of your planned to avoid getting flagged.
I've had Discover card call me to tell me my card was being used at a grocery store in California, then NFCU Visa tell me some shopping spree in Baltimore was occurring. Both times, the card was shut down immediately, I rec'd phone calls and texts. I wasn't out any money. Discover card reissued me a new number, that was kind of a PITA, resetting bills using autopay, but par for the course.

This I agree with completely. All my W7 boxes use the "classic" view. And I don't understand the appeal of wide and narrow screens for anything other than watching widescreen format movies - which is NOT what I do on a PC. Most web pages and documents are long, not wide. I hate my new work laptop b/c I'm always having to scroll up and down. If I need a lot of width I'll just add a 2nd monitor.

I've seen people at work rotate their widescreen monitors 90 degrees, I assume there's a setting to make that work properly, or maybe just a button on the monitor. I never looked, I'm fine with widescreen.

I have a screen like that in my lab. It's a built-in option in Windows now. Great for coding and visualizing data. A little hard on the neck though since it's 24" tall but you tend to still sit the usual 18" or so distance away. 4:3 really just works well.

So I went to the bank today to get all this handled. Mind you I had to make two different phone calls on Saturday just to get the card locked and a new one on order. I had to file paperwork with my bank which they did in their office today, but sent me home with a phone number for VISA that I have to call on my own to notify them of the fraud. AND, I still have to pay the whole bill or else they will start charging finance charges. I was exasperated at the thought. And I told the bank representative (Coastal Federal Credit Union) that I find it preposterous that I have to pay for fraudulent charges when I have filed everything already. They do not have a mechanism to handle this, I have to wait for VISA to credit my account back?!?!?!

I am almost done with this credit union. 20 year member, outstanding credit and pay the bill in full every single month. Honestly their savings rates suck, their mortgage rates weren't terrible but their paperwork requirements were, their other financial "instruments" This is apparently how everyone gets treated so I am thinking I need to start looking for another bank that handles this stuff better. What can anyone tell me about BB&T's fraud handling on Credit Cards?

For BB&T, I've had them as long as I've had a bank account, even have a CC and the mortgage with them. Can't complain. I do like that all of my loans can be managed in one place, so I tend to keep most everything with them.

BB&T isn't great on fraud protection with DEBIT cards. They aren't open 24/7, so if you try calling on off hours, well you are shit out of luck. I've never dealt with them on the CC fraud protection as I don't normally use that card.

I use Citi MC Double Cash and Amex Preferred. Citi has 2% back across the board and Amex has 6% at grocery stores, 3% on fuel, and 1% everywhere else. They are CCs and not debit so there is pretty good fraud protection.

I'm sure others will have good options and opinions as well.

Wow, I'd switch too. Not sure if you qualify to join but USAA has been great to me. Had fraud twice on a debit card, each time they called me, handled everything during the first and only call and expedited the new card to me without trying to add some fedex fee.
They even held on the line while I went downstairs to the ATM so I'd have enough cash until the new card came.

I find this quite shocking.
I've been hit maybe 3 times over the years on a BoA CC, my wife too on a different one.
Every time I just call them (or they call me) and declare the charges. They put a flag on them, and I wasn't liable for the cost on the bill. Literally 1 conversation and done. They send a new card, life moves on.
The problem here is your credit union, not Visa, but I don't understand why you even have to deal with them.

One thing that is kind of convenient about the BoA CCs is that when you pay online, they credit the payment as happening right then, that day - not the next business day. This is pretty helpful for slackers like me who will remember on a Saturday that the bill is due, um, in 12 hours...

Wow just looked both of these up, as a combo that is a smokin' deal. looks like the Citi 2% deal is 1% at purchase, 1% when you pay. Sicne I pay every month, why not?

It is the best card you can get unless you travel all the time and get a card for that or like rockcity said, you buy a lot in groceries or a special category and you get a card for that. I just switched to this one.

I drive like 60-70k miles a year and Bri does about 30k. I use the Amex for our fuel; it adds up pretty quick with 3% back on that. And given what we spend on groceries, it may not seem that much but 6% back is just $ in the bank for things we would be buying anyway. ;)

Yup, I agree. I do not understand why this has to be so clunky and "unfriendly". Now you are probably getting why I am so frustrated that people hack my cards. My time is so important and all this extra runaround is not worth it.

My credit union also has same-day payment on the CC which is why I like using it. For those of you with a CC not from your bank, how do you pay? Can you EFT it or set up a payment from your bank? I don't like the idea of having to write a check, but we are in the twenty-teens now so I am betting that is not needed anymore?

Thanks, that is very helpful. My mortgage is with BB&T so doing other business with them would be fine. I only use my Debit card to get cash out of an ATM and never to purchase anything. I decided that after the first time my CC got hacked because I did not want the exposure and trying to recover my lost money.

That deal with Citi and Amex is quite compelling and quite a deal. I always pay my card off so that would be a pretty nice incentive.

Yep. I have my cc's setup to auto draft full balance from checking. I just make sure checking has funds. I look at bills a couple times per month, setup transfer from savings to checking as needed. My CU allows me to schedule transfers, so I set them up a day before bills. I get paid once per month, have moved most of my bills to the beginning of the month, so it all happens within a week or so, makes it simple.

I don't have an account w/ the BoA bank. Just the CC. In fact the only reason I have the CC with them is b/c they bought out Fleet, who had bought our Household Bank, who had bought a chunk of... drumroll... NationsBank CC accounts like 15 years ago when they restructured and changed to BoA. lol. I started this account in 1995.

Anyway - I pay by EFT online. I have never set foot in a BoA bank. I also have a Citi card, same thing, pay by EFT. I don't know anyone who dosn't pay that way.

the only checks we ever write are to our daycare. We wrote exactly 12 last year. Oh, 13 - paid a check to the Boy Scouts... who now take PayPal.

Question - I used to do this - auto-draft - but keep running into trouble with them getting out of cycle. CC requires a 30 day cycle. 12x30 = 360 per year. So I found the payments slowly creeping out of sync w/ monthly payday, screwing up this plan. Do you not have this problem?
