So the crankshaft in my chevy broke in half not good........

Bought a semi complete 95 Dodge 4 wheel drive. my plan.
Motor is complete with 5 speed bell housing attached no tranny or t-case. I just rebuilt the tranny in my chevy so I am going to use that. After i pull the motor from the dodge i want to re gasket the whole thing on an engine stand. I don't really need or want it to be the fastest thing on 4 wheels but would like to do do the important hard stuff first.

Q's
- Should i replace the head gasket while its out, what gasket should i use and should i go ahead and do ARP studs. What will a stock or affordable head gasket hold boost wise with Studs?

- Will I need to change my chevy input shaft on the NV4500 to a dodge input shaft.

- what clutchs are acceptable

- Why are the KPD pin kit $80 for a gasket bolt and a tab

-i have pyro guage, and boost guage, do i need a fuel presure guage

- Is stock fuel presure accpetable or do i need to upgrade

- Injectors these have 260k on them is it time to replace, if replacement needed what should i go w/?

- I have 4inch exhuast on the truck already is stock down pipe acceptable

- going to do a fuel plate mod and govener springs and tweek turbo

- what else do i need to do should do form the start

SOUTH BEND - I absolutely love mine and its barely even broken in yet. Couldn't be happier.

You can make your own tab and get the gasket from Cummins. I got the kit from TST. It comes with the tab, a new bolt, RTV (worked great for me, some prefer to use a new gasket), threadlocker, and the new crank seal. You left out some parts, so thats why the cost is a little higher. Its only $65 from TST and the kit includes some great instructions, its well worth it. - http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/showthread.php?t=143355 - there are some pictures of what all is involved.

No, not with a 12 valve.

- Is stock fuel presure accpetable or do i need to upgrade

It should be fine.

Do you get any white smoke or studdering at the higher RPMs?

Thats a lot of miles on those injectors, it may be worth replacing them.

If you wanted to do replacements, how much are you looking to spend?

The stock downpipe is 3" (possibly 3.5") if I recall correctly. I'd get a 4" downpipe to hook into the current 4" exhaust, it'll help the turbo breathe a lot better.

Fuel plate is great and easy to do. I haven't done the governor springs yet, but I should. I've heard they are a ton of fun to install... *cough*. By tweaking the turbo, do you mean installing a boost elbow or blocking the wastegate or what?

I don't know what transmission you are using. If its a NV4500 you may want to address the 5th gear issue while its out. I didn't when I did my 5spd swap, but I will at some point, probably if/when it goes.

-i have pyro guage, and boost guage, do i need a fuel presure guageno real need for fuel gauge unless you plan to do some crazy stuff or if you plan to run WVO on it
- Is stock fuel presure accpetable or do i need to upgrade

- going to do a fuel plate mod and govener springs and tweek turbo
- what else do i need to do should do form the startmy biggest suggestion is while engine is out do all the little things you want to.. a lot easier to work on it when out..

I think chase has addressed every possible issue with the nv4500 :flipoff2:

should be a cool project !!!

Yes my NV4500 is good to go................ my biggest Q right now is should I slap a head gasket on it when the motor is out, im going to reseal the whole motor regardless, im not swapping this thing in to have it piss oil on my driveway. motor has 265k and i would like to do th eheadgasket now to hold 50lbs of boost i don't think ill ever do more than that.

My NV4500 is 2wd so no 5th gear nut to back out, but we have fixed a few of those if you need it done.

pm JT, aka stump. I know he went with the head studs on his black Dodge, but the white one is still running the stock stuff. He blew the gasket in his black truck, but then again, I saw the boost gauge go past 60 psi and bounce off the peg at zero, lol. I've heard of people using the marine head gasket. I think it is a little thicker. Not sure.

The chevy nv4500 uses a smaller input than the dodge. Might as well go ahead and get the big upgraded input for the dodge, since you have to get a new one anyway. If you get it and the clutch from southbend, they'll knock $200 off IIRC. It's pretty common for the stock ones to break with more power and rough use.

buy a fuel plate, they are cheap and you\'ll spend a ton of time tweaking yours, and unless your time isn\'t worth anything its not worth it

buy 150 or 180hp injectors from coaltrain diesel, hes on cumminsforum.com, my 180hp set was $475 and they work great and added a ton of power.

do the gov spring and block the wastegate with a pipe plug,

i\'d do the studs and headgasket while its out, i like the cometic gasket on mine. Unless you want crazy high boost a headgasket should be fine, if you want to wait a little but longer get the head machined for firerings or something similar
