That might be scary in a Toyota, I don't know. But I assure you, you can walk that in a stock tj on highway terrains... Even with two sleeping babies in the back seat.

Thank you Snappy for coordinating our efforts. I think that the past year has been great in the direction the work days are going. Definitely not like it was.

On another note, I'd love to see a ranger out there and DUI checkpoints! Heck, I'd volunteer to have a ranger ride with me. Only if I get to have a bubble gum light on the roof and chase down the offenders though!

I went back and reread all my posts in this thread. I was honest, I shared my opinion and I suggested some alternatives. I'm not sure your response was warranted Bart.

I've been to work days, spoken to the Rangers and read everything I see about URE. It just seems like all we get is excuses.

I'm more than willing to work together, discuss the issues and chip in.

I often think about what I'll do when URE is no longer open or a viable spot to wheel. I'll wheel less often at places farther away. Do I like that? No. I like having an option close to home.

I want to be positive. I just need a reason. In the time I've been going to URE what Ive seen is more trash, more drinking, more spider trails and illegal bypasses and less open trails.

And Snappy, thank you for all your work. And thank you to everyone that volunteers at the work days.

I'll stop moaning now Bart. I apologize.
 
I was not directing this at you, though I could see how you might think that. Your posts were well thought out and valid. It is directed toward those who like to complain and do nothing about it. Seems we usually get a fair number of those kinds of responses to threads like this.
 
My comments were not directed at any one person. Things on here do not always come out the way people mean them as they would in person. I am bad for that.

If we do not work to keep our trails we have left then we will have nothing. Right now the USFS has no money to throw at the trails. So we need to do all we can.

I am old school. Deeds not Words.

I know it's not that easy, but I say increase the cost of trail passes if they need more money. But I bet it's not that easy. My guess is the money goes to DC and then gets allocated back out so even if we increased the cost of passes, it would go to pay for someone's cable bill or something.
 
The increase in prices has been talked about. But it can not be done right now. Debra has said why a few times now to me but i can not think of the reason now for the life of me. As usual it is a bunch of Government BS from what i remember. I have 30 years of working for the Government so i know it all to well.

And i will say this again for people on the fence. Please come out to the new workdays. We are getting a Metric ton of stuff done every one of them now. They are not at all like the last few years have been. And it is the perfect time to talk to a USFS rep and talk to them about your ideas / suggestions / or any and all questions you may have. They are VERY approachable.

And one final thing from me.

I am also very upset about what we are having to do to these trails to keep them open. Trust me , I get it. I have been wheelin up here since 1990 and have seen all sorts of changes. I am just trying to keep the trails open so the next generation has a chance to see / use them. That is my whole reasoning of working on them. I have no kids myself ( least no one has showed up at my door yet say he /she is my kid ) so i am doing this for all the others out there. I myself just get on the trails to get away from people and enjoy nature. Except for a few places out here i keep my cruiser in 2 low and just put it in 4 low on a few obstacles.

We have requested this as wheelers and even the ranger has done so also. If you would like to help, make a donation to friends of ure. We use that money for project and equipment rental for work days....
 
I'm planning to do a workday in the coming months since my jeep is finally "done" and I'm not spending every weekend on it. It looks like a lot of fun with a chance to work alongside of some great people.

Just curious, is there any way to make Daniel a locker and/or winch required trail? I definitely agree about so many driving off trail to get around the major obstacles and so many open diff stock type rigs try it and just make a mess of everything and cause more erosion from simply not having a capable enough rig to go up the trail in the designated area so they bypass the obstacles in illegal areas. A ranger would help at the most frequented illegal bypasses for sure. One particular example occurred when I was up on Daniel with a group over the Thanksgiving weekend and there was a group of fools, one was in a bone stock grand Cherokee with worn out street goodyear tires attempted the first ledge for about 20-30 minutes straight. He should not have been there in the first place. We tried to keep them off of the illegal bypass going up the first ledge but they ignored us as we didn't have a badge or authority to reprimand them or ticket them as needed so they continued on and went around all of the tough obstacles. My solution, require a locker, 31" tires minimum and a winch. Or maybe 2 out of 3 of those. I know a lot of extreme trails in Moab and other famous parks have minimum requirements, why not do that with Daniel also.
 
You don't need a winch or a locker to drive up Daniel. Hell, I've done it on street tires. Walked right up.

The problem you're describing has nothing to do with equipment, and everything to do with driver ability, driver knowledge, and the driver's respect (or lack thereof) for himself, his vehicle, and the forest. Putting a locker and 33s on that Cherokee wouldn't magically make him a better driver, or make him stay on the trail.
 
You can go up Daniel in a lowered honda now. Been paved....
 
Instead of speculation, you can see exactly what the second ledge looks like on Facebook. The 'Friends Of Uwharrie' page has a photo up on their page that shows it after modification.
