Do I need to register my buggy?

I was doing a little research for a Moab trip and it came up that I should be registered. Somebody posted with this:
You being in NC I would think you would know that technically at Tellico it must be licensed and insured.
Now you will almost never see a NC Ranger in there unless somebody has crashed on trail 1 but if you make the mistake of rolling across the TN line at Statline campground you better be prepared for a ticket and possibly towed. The TN Rangers have nothing better to do then check registartion, insurance and coolers (No booze, they will nail you even if its just in the cooler) to generate revenue.
Is he right? If so, what should I be doing?

Note: Of course I am licensed and insured on my street rigs but I didn't know about off-road requirements. I scanned the "tag tech" thread but it was devoted solely to tow rigs.

DId it come with a title when you bought it??

IF so go to DMV and mak sure it is in your name and get insurance on it..

Stay on the trails (trail one included) and you won't get a ticket at Tellico, that's why you pass 4 wheelers on the road there all the time...but go past the pay station in either direction (NC side or TN side) and you can bet you'll get a ticket. The NC gys are cool they've never bothered us, but during Dixie Run the Tenn. side rangers had a whole group stopped coming out of the road from the top of lower 2. ask Tempoffroad what his ticket cost him...$125 no arguing.

If you drive on a state maintained road, then yes, you have to be current on your tag, insurance and inspection.

I have also seen this enforced at uwharrie...just an FYI.

Anytime on OR CROSSING a state maintained road (asphalt or not) must have tags, registration, ins, etc. (I.E. must be street legal)

Now a good friend owns a used car lot and frequently uses temp tags(once had 7 t4emp tagged rigs in 1 caravan into Murphy), which are covered under the dealer's insurance etc. I'd hate to fight that one but I guess technically it would work.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't have a title for the rig, neither did Dave (xj35) as far as I know. I just called the DMV and the lady had never heard of an registration for a non-street worthy rig.

So for tellico I just need to trailer it to the pay stations and I'll be fine? I guess I'll have to learn more about what Moab requires. It would be weird to me if you needed a street legal rig to run the trails there but sometimes when you leave the south east guys deal with strict rules like that.

It's got a Jeep frame, just title it as one?

I have been there. (MOAB) They do frown on fenderless rigs. If you have headlights, tail lights,Brake lights, rear view, etc. they usually don't mess with you in town as long as you are going to and from trails. DO NOT got past town limits period. State boys will nail you to the wall!! What I call Intown trails include, Hells revenge, Fins & things, Pritchett Canyon. Most all trails have big parking areas at the trail head. Alot of the trails start and end near the same place. A time or two we had to hitch a ride to get back to the tow rig. Not really a problem. If you go alone (as in 1 rig like we did) CITY Market is the unofficial meeting place. Be there around 8am and there will be plenty of groups to ride with. KC

I read in one of the four wheeling mags that moab really caters to the wheeling community during big events by not writing tickets for non street legal vehicle being operated on the street. Never heard much abot it during normal days......Just a stupid side question, how do you pronounce moab; mow-ab or mow-ub
