no I was not speeding......
I got a ticket for passing a 2000ish Windstar during an NC emissions inspection with the "MIL" bulb removed. I know I should have caught this but I did not. I was busy, caught the 3rd brake light however the MIL bulb was not caught. I now have a $130ish fine from the state with court coming up. Is there any way out of this? Does anyone have a picture of a windstar dash with all the lights on (key on engine off) maybe I can pleed ignorence if there is another simular dummy light (maint req.) This is my first ticket for this. I have been inspecting for 2 years and none of the shops I work for have paid me 1 cent for doing these inspections. Can I give up my rights to inspect and they drop the fine? Also I know of 2 guys that left the state before they got the tickets and their tickets were thrown out. Any advise will help.
thanks -Jon

ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law. Other than that, I have nothing.

That's a different kind of ignorance. He knew it wasn't legal to pass a car with a tampered MIL but didn't know it was missing. The state should be fined for pulling the indicator bulb.:flipoff2:

Should have checked when you started it though.

look for the big white X spray painted on the bottom of the car next time. Most places, if they figure out it's a state car they put a big X underneath.

Til they get caught and fined.

there someone on this broad that got the samething

DUDE DO NOT FIGHT IT you will make them mad...Pay the fine learn to do inpections right and thank the DMV inpector that it did not go against the station.
I have been doing inpections for over 12 years. Been fine myself twice now once for mil light other time for computer error. Read wrong vin when i scan it by 1 number i didnt fight either..

Why didn't the scanner catch it? Is that only in certain counties?

I wonder if they didnt break the law by tampering with the vehicle...what about a federal law....

The scanner is only going to catch it if there is a code. No code no light, but the light must be there and functioning(i.e. when you cut the key on it cycles through and lights up and cuts off when the eng is running).

If it was $130,00 fine...maybe leave state, but $130 :shaking: Just sounds like an expensive lesson. Why give up the inspection cert. that I am sure helps with employment status.

It's not that the light was removed, it that the light didn't illuminate on the "self check" when you turn the key on.

That is what all thelights are about when you turn on the ignition, all about safety and emmisions legality.

you have 3-5seconds to scan the dash for the light, think about how many DIFFERENT dash confiurations there are, and how many versions of the CEL there are. ( some are check engine, some sas Service engine soon, some are just a picture of an engine.

It's a bullshit ticket, and they hang a lot of folks on it and a few other things.

I tried like hell to avoid getting my inspectons license, went to all the classes, and did the pre-testing at the stations I was to be an inspector at, just avoided getting it.

so basically you have to look for the light, and thats it?

What a bunch of garbage. Obviously the state's desperate for any money they can get.

Most of the time these are fix it tickets and when you fix it BEFORE court date the magistrate will throw it out.

I have got several fines from the state for inspections and have won some and lost some it court so I would go and fight your case and see what happends. The DA has thrown some out and never had to talk to the judge and others had to pay but it is worth the time to go and see what happends.

One guy got ticketed for telling the person the check engine light was on. Busted! The dude is supposed to just take the money and flunk the car and not say anything like "the car is going to fail because of the check engine light. Why do you go get that fixed first than come back."
