Exhaust fan for the shop

Just built a 30x36 post frame building and have been looking into exhaust fans without much luck. I am surprised by the lack of information I have been able to find about what size to go with and the quality of them kind of seems all over the place after reading reviews. I’m leaning towards a 24” variable speed unit. Anyone on here have any information or recommendations on what they have used?

Chris, I went simple. I built a shelf between two posts at the peak of my building (24X30) and put a harbor freight red fan on it, cut a hole the size of the exhaust and slid the tip of it into the opening. I only cut three sides, leaving the top solid, bent it outwards so it makes kinda a shed cover for the fan. I just put a receptacle to plug it up to and a light switch to turn it off and on. Seems to work pretty good during the summer, and the few times I smoked up the shop.

My shop is 28'x48' and I have a 24" exhaust fan at the solid end of the shop about 36" from the Gable. It's inadequate IMO. I wish I would have went with a bigger fan. It will pull the smoke/exhaust out but it doesnt feel like it really moves any air unless I'm out behind the shop where it's blowing out. Mine came from Grainger many years ago and it's single speed.

What I installed and the company I used. The did calculations based on square footage and supply. I can turn over the air theoretically 3 times an hour. Fairly quite, one speed, belt driven. I like.

This is all good information for me as well. I've had this in my mind for as long as I've wanted to build a shop. Perhaps a set of louvers on one end and a louvered exhaust fan on the other. Not only for when you smoke up the inside, but also for excess heat in the summer or even for when I sweep it out and stir up all the dust.
