I swear I hope I am preaching to the choir here but I want to pass this on anyway because it has hit so dang close to home.

DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!!!

Last Friday, my Uncle was in Raleigh for a wake for a friend of his who had passed away from cancer. Seems my Uncle thought it would be a super brilliant idea to get totally :poop:faced and drive around.

Luckily, no one else was hurt in the accident.

When they got him to the hospital, they did a blood draw (since he refused the breathalizer on the scene)... you ready for this? .272 was his BAC. And, there was an open bottle of tequila in the cab.

Long story short... here's the pics. How he survived is beyond us...

that sucks. id hate to see his face when he saw the truck when hes sober.

He was drunk, that's how he survived. Sad to say...

A drunk guy and his drink friend hit my two aunts. He was in a ford escort, they were in a Jeep grand cherokee. The friend was air lifted to the hospital, the driver walked away. My two aunts, one had both feet crushed (driver) and the pass had serious back issues. They were clear off the side of the road and stopped when he hit them at, get this... an estimated 110mph!!! It took them 3 hours to cut the jeep apart enough to get them both out.

glad to hear he is going to be ok. But i would think the front license plate on his truck would mean he knew better. how many people has he had to pull from wrecked vehicles from drunk driving?

he was a Lieutant in the VF and he stil decided to get drunk and drive... What the hell is wrong with him..

has he not learned a damn thing being with the VFD

And coming from someone who served as a voly and is now a paid FF and an Lt. he shouldn't be allowed to ever be in the fire service again. Doesn't matter if he's an officer or not. I know for me I'd always under every situation have to now wonder if I could trust him or not on wether he was under the influence or sober.

What? thats insane. So you dont drink ever? If you do wouldn't that same line go for you too?

Well, i will say thanks for the reminder, i must say, it has a been a while since i have gotten behind the wheel after drinking( or while drinking, as the case sometimes was). I cant say i never did it, college was crazy.......... Im am glad i realized what i was REALLY doing, before i got arrested, or worse, hurt myself, and innocent bystanders. For some it takes more to realize this than others i guess??? It just took a few threads like this, on various forums i am on, to make me know what i should do. Some people take a lot more to make them change their ways.

And this is slightly off topic, b ut what is a wake? It's not a funeral as far as I know? Is it a visitation, or what? Sorry, but none of the people i have known who passed away have had anythign called that, so i really just don't know?

I think he was specifically talking about the poor decision to drive WHILE drinking/very drunk, not just having a drink.

[cliff claven] A wake was originated in old Ireland, it was found that people were occasionally buried "alive" accidently.

The Irish, being vigorious users of alcohol, would pass out from drinking, and it would take many hours for them to "wake up" many times these folks had been buried with the thought they were dead.

The tradition was started to wait 3 days before burial to ensure in fact that death had actually occured. If the person actually "woke up" the party continued. [/cliff claven]

I actually read this somewhere, and when I am able to find it I will post the actual findings.

having Googled "origin of a wake"

No hes saying that he wouldn't want to serve next to this guy as a firefighter b/c he made the bad choice of drinking and driving. He knows nothing of this guy and he his marking him as an alcholic and blah blah blah. I don't want to get into an e-pissing match but I thought that clame was a little overboard

One thing is for sure , no one needs to post anything negative about this guy if you have EVER done it. Dont throw rocks if you live in a glass house. Also if he was that drunk where were his friends or did he get drunk by his self.

5,6 beers and drove home, oh I live just up the road...Most people are guilty for this but it is still DUI...remember that when you post on this touchy thread

Well said. ^

I'm not a fireman but one would have to think after getting that wasted and deciding to drive anyway, that he would not think twice about rolling out for a fire call. Giving the local LEO, EMT and FIRE 2 calls to deal with instead of one.

They should post those pics at the firehouse.

Exactly what I'm sure drove Josh's post. I wouldn't want to be first in with that guy behind me on the attack line, not knowing if he's shitfaced, while my life is in his hands.

At least he had weighted tags though! :flipoff2:

.272 BAC is pretty much slobberknocked - .600 BAC is clinically dead or some BS like that.....

I'm sure he's up to his eye-balls in trouble, but it was a damn stupid thing to do. Glad no one died....

.400 BAC is dead, the legal limit is now .080 (used to be .100).
.272 is "invincible"

Why the hell not?? The moron drank A SHIT TON and drove. Oh thats right, 5-6 beers...lets not forget about the open bottle of freakin panty dropping juice sitting next to him. Ya know what, I'm not against a grown man have 3 beers w/in 1.5 hrs go out and drive, or someone who had a shot and a beer a dinner party go out and drive home...its the assholes that get down right tanked and drive. This guy was tanked. End of story. Stop defending someone that could have easily killed any of us had we gotten in the way of his 5000lb bullet.

EDIT:
I forgot to mention...I hope he's OK and can get through this.

He had a CDL so his legal limit was .000

Yes he is/was an officer on the firedept. As to his status there, we are unsure.

His license has been suspended

He was fired from his job

He is facing three seperate charges;
1. DUI
2. Careless and reckless endangerment
3. Open container in the passenger area

I am NOT excusing him for this but I will try to give a little background here;
He has been going through some very tough times lately. Him and my Aunt divorced after 25 years of marriage. He has battled with drug addiction and alcoholism. He lost everything he owned because of the drugs and alcohol. He has had a couple accidents, which we now believe were also alcohol related, that have done damage to him physically and he hurts from those and takes pain killers... reverting back to the drug addiction. Not too long ago he was in the hospital for quite a while with pancriatites (sp?). They were shocked he made it through that.

This is only a little bit of what has been happening to him.

This was not to excuse him or make you think it's ok because of these things... only to give a little background and to show we have been dealing with slightly lesser stuff for a while now. This is by far the worst yet though and we really, truely, honestly hope and pray that this may be the time his eyes are opened fully and he sees the path of destruction he has been heading down for so long now.

Unfortunately sometimes this is what it takes for a person to come out of a "hard time" and realize the deadly path they are on. I hope he straightens up and does something better with his life and maybe something for other peoples lives around him to make up for what he's put them thru.

I had my DUI ticket, lic. revocation, and insurance hike. Something I'm not proud of, something I look back on and call myself a dumbass about. I'm actually glad that Trooper pulled me over that night. I was started down druken driving path and luckily that slapped me in the face before any damage was caused. I hope your uncle cleans up now for you and your family.

Thanks for airing your families dirty laundry for all to see and hopefully learn from.

Think if he had hit you, or someone you care about. I do go out and have drinks but I make sure I'm not driving and that I will no be responding to calls on the volunteer side or not going on duty for a shift. Anyone who sees what we see in our line or work and then goes out and does that has no room in my crew. My guys go out and celebrate but they are sensible about it. Your statements claiming of what I;m saying shows your ignorance. You obviously have never put your life on the line to save someone or there personal property. We follow 2 rules in this job. Personal safety first. If we can help ourselves we can't help you. Protect life and property 2nd. Until you have actually gone into a burning house or building and seen first hand what happens and have the walls and ceilings falling around you, potential booby traps if your in somewhere that turns out to be a meth lab for example or you have a hunter or gun collector with stockpiled ammo that starts going off your comments on what I'm accusing him of are overboard not mine. Life sux for all of us at times and we all make bad mistakes, some worse than others. This was one of those mistakes. Anyone who will put there self in that sitaution though will or has more than like put others in situation to jeopardize them and may have done it more than once. One thing I'm sure we will see eye to eye on is that if your life is on the line do you want someone with you that could become a liability on your safety when the time comes. Someone who you have to question are they able to clearly make a rational decision. Would you trust you life to the guy at all times without questioning his judgements or soberness?
