Free at last

First off, since it's from Florida, I would have the money re-counted!
Secondly, I am sure they will turn around and tax the piss out of it, so he can probably look at about 40% of that 1.75 million
Still, he will at least be able to get a home and enjoy life a little bit.

hmmm...do you pay tax on that?

lets see.....

uncle sam wrongly made you pay your debt to society.

after 35 years, the error was corrected and uncle sam's way of returning your payment is 1.75mil in cash.

will the government tax you on money they are returning to you after "stealing" it from you?

i'd be effing pissed if i was taxed.

Well technically, it is income.
They come to that kind of number by estimating what you would/might have made in income NOT being locked up. Which, of course is 100% speculation but you gotta start somewhere.
So since it's based on theoretical income, sure they'll tax it.

And every time I hear a story like this, I question my stance on capital punishment.

I still firmly believe if you kill someone unprovoked, in cold blood, or hurt a child and we ABSOLUTELY KNOW you did it, you shold be hung in the town square and let sing for a week.

But every time I hear one of these, I say "What if we kill one innocent person...."

Everything was so easier black and white when I was young and knew it all. The older I get, the more I learn, the less I am sure of.

I'm in the same boat.

Here's the problem - technically, you aren't supposed to be CONVICTED unless we absolutely know you did it.

"Beyond a reasonable shadow of a doubt", right?

well, with what they had back then in this case, they were sure, new tech is what freed him.

They were sure because one crooked police officer showed the boy 5 pictures. 4 white guys and 1 Black guy.

Good for him not to hold a grudge. It is amazing how those who have a heavy true belief in god can find forgiveness and not be furious. 35 years is a long time to sit and know your not guilty but cannot prove it. I would go insane. I just pray he truly is not guilty and he gets to have some good times with family after many years away.
