Don’t leave anything on the stove and walk away to do something else because you’ll be distracted and loose track of what’s going on in the kitchen.

My next door neighbor did this and his house burned to the ground this morning.

 That's terrible

On a more selfish note...you get to LOOK at that now until it's cleaned up (fire destroyed a home on FriendShip-Ledford across from my neighborhood entrance, and we got to look at that for 8 months till it was finally torn down)

That really sucks. And terrifies me. I can’t imagine the personal belongings lost in a fire that can never be replaced. I know they are just “things” but some “things” are precious and can never be replaced.
Prayers for comfort and peace for everyone involved.

Hope everyone is ok. Horrible feeling. My biggest fear. I woke in my childhood to a neighbors house smoldering and burnt down. Then we had a series of chimney fires. Its stuck with me.

I've done that twice over the years, but only when boiling water for iced tea. Set it on kill, and walked away (do it all the time, we make 2 gallons 5 times a week). Got distracted, ran the pot dry both times, and smoked up the house really bad for one of those because the pot was a non-stick.

Neighbor lives alone and is fine. Turns out he’s broke and let his homeowners insurance lapse so I expect we’ll be looking at this for a while. His car that was parked in the garage was unscathed, so at least he has a mode of transportation. Other than the garage, the entire roof is collapsed.

I doubt he has many options other than to sell it as-is for the value of the land minus the cleanup cost?

Chimney fires are no joke! we had one, I think I was maybe 14 yrs old. 1st thing I wanted to do was through a "flare" in the wood burning stove to extinguish it. Mom was home, dad was out of town, she wouldn't let me open the doors. 1st thing the firefighters did was throw two in. (didn't do shit) they borrowed a chain from us that was 1/2" to try and knock the creosote down into the box, (that's what is usually burning). Guy with the chain lost his eyebrows and when he brought the chain out it was cherry red. :kaioken: We were lucky that it was a masonry built chimney not these new galvanized ones that most new houses have.

Damn, that sucks bad. My aunt and uncle are finally about to start building after the fire at their house. At least they have insurance.

Shit like this scares me too. Right around Christmas we started having a weird smell in our bathroom. I recognized it as an electrical smell from working as an electrician with my grandfather when I was a kid. I started sniffing around and found the GFCI on the wall so hot it was untouchable. I cut power and grabbed some gloves. Pulled that sucker off the wall and the whole side was melted and the gang box was charred and melting. It was minutes away from lighting that wall up. We were just about to head out the door to the WF Christmas parade too. Would have come home to a disaster.

Advice on a chimney fire, throw ice on the fire, it will melt, putting out the fire the steam should put out the chimney.

I had friends that had a major fire at Christmas (with 3 young kids) no one was hurt, the fire department saved most of the house, then got the community involved and saved Christmas for the kids!

There are good people everywhere, I take my hat off for firefighters and what they do.

Hate this for your neighbor....glad he is safe though.

In a related, but not quite as compassionate thought...if it would sell for just land value, and the garage is still good, would that solve your problem of wanting to build a shop? Granted....probably not as big as you would want, but if the price was right....

You make 10 gallons of tea a week?
Intrigued....thats a lot of tea!

We do. Almost a gallon per day per person, which actually isn't a lot considering we're at work all day. It's really only a few glasses per day, and we don't drink soda or anything like that. We put a little stevia in it to take the edge off, because I can't do sweet tea and don't want the calories of actual sugar. We have 4 tea pitchers in heavy rotation, 2 at a time, and a stainless pot dedicated to brewing.

I'm about to mix up another two gallons before I go to bed, so I won't make more until Thursday.

I read that, and then instantly heard in my head some lady that looked like Mrs Doubtfire with an English accent say “care for a spot of tea?”

Not sure why....

Did they ever determine what caused that one? I heard a lawn mower in the garage then I heard it wasn’t.

It did sit there a long minute. I figured that was insurance red tape.

Oh it was the lawnmower. It caught fire pretty close to where they stored all the fuel in plastic gas cans, and WOOF....it was a massive fire for sure

They're SUCH great people too. She's one of the owners of "Get it to go" bakery on 109 across from the watering hole. SUPER nice folks. Their sons went to school with my daughters.

Good to know and a lesson for all. Ive never met them but my wife knows her a little. She can sho bake! We helped out and the kids on the street even had a lemonade stand for them and did REALLY well due to some generous neighbors and a road biker with a fat wallet. Glad they weren’t hurt and they got to rebuild. That was a big dang fire.
