The wife and I are soon taking a trip to DC, we are staying in rosylin. I do know I want to see the museums and I have wanted to go to Arlington for a long time.

What are the must visit places around the national mall, places to avoid? We will have two days for the DC area, and a half day or so for Arlington.

Everything is cool, just don't waste your time at the "famous hamburger place" all the presidents go to! WAY over priced and not any better then Wendy's!!

And are there taxi,s around the mall area, I am dealing with knee issues and want to reduce some long distance walking if possible.

We lived in Alexandria for a few years. All the museums along the mall are good. I like the American History, Air and Space and Natural History. If you've got time, the Air and Space also has another museum out near Dulles that is my favorite of all of them....a giant hangar with a bunch of sweet airplanes and a space shuttle.

My wife and I crave the chicken friend rice and general tso's from Cafe Asia in Rosslyn....seriously good stuff!

Definitely go to the Holocaust museum. It is very informative and awe inspiring (Not in the good way). some exhibits there that will stay with you forever. But go in the second half of your day, you will not really want to follow that with anything else...
Don't bother w/ the national aquarium - but if you do like aquariums and have the time, the big one in Baltimore is fantastic.

No taxis ON the mall, but you could catch one on the roads that go around it. All the buildings have an entrance from the mall, and one that is on the road(s) going around it.

DC traffic is terrible and parking can be a bitch. Use the Metro as much as possible, it's great.

It wasn't my idea but did the tour bus once. It was well worth it. Got us in the White House tour. Didn't waste any time.

Pretty much take your pick with the ones on the mall. Air and Space is probably my favorite. Holocaust is probably a must-see, too. I think the FDR Memorial is weird (in a Soviet way), but Vietnam/Lincoln/Korea/WWII/Reflecting Pool is worth seeing. Jefferson Memorial is fine, but it's out by its lonesome.

Holocaust museum x2

I've been wanting to make a trip back there for yrs. Let us know how your trip goes. I hope to be able to keep my shit together a little better next time I see my family's names on that wall.

And fer fucks' sake... stand on the right, walk on the left.
I designed the mechanical and plumbing on "square 54" and on one of my site visits I was on the escalator from the metro headed to ground level. Standing next to the architect (who was on my right ) talking when a dude 10 people back yells "STAND TO THE RIGHT"
startled the hell out of me, but suddenly realized I was the clog in the artery

Dude all the walking you're gonna do IN the museums are going to WRECK your knees. Get some fresh rooster before you go and just walk the mall. Unfortunately that's the very best way to get around and see what you want to. And like Many have said, don't skip dulles air and space. The one on the mall is great but at dulles is amazing. My old office (KTA) is across the street :D

After working out of town north of Lorton many times in the summer and trying to get home in friday afternoon traffic this is what I thought of first..............

I got nuthin

Make a stop at the National Museum of the Marine Corps on the way up.
It's the fucking weirdest looking building you can see form the interstate. Giant spike.

Oh and be prepared for shitty, shitty, shitty traffic going in from Dale city onward. It can even be backed up all the way from Fredericksburg onward.

Just remembered, right now they started working on the metro doing some maintenance and some stops are closed right now and less trains are running on some of the tracks. Keep that in mind also right now, UBER is also huge there, but will sometimes surge price right now because of that as well. If you can avoid peak hours though you will probably be fine.

I've been wanting to go back myself. My wife has never been and I haven't been in probably 8 years. Biggest thing holding me back is I can't take my Austrian uncle G with me.

But definitely go to the holocaust museum.

My family went recently and they loved the Smithsonian Museum. My daughter was hoping to see the potus so she could give him an earful...lol

Don't forget nose plugs unless you have a strong stomach. It reeks of bullshit in the area...

Subscribed to this. Haven't been up since junior high, and my fiancé has never been.

I want to organize and plan a trip up for us.

I'd like to take the train up from rocky mount, and just use the metro and taxi for everything.

It's 100% touristy, but we did a Segway tour in Boston and loved it. If you want to cover a lot of ground, it might not be a bad way to go. Don't forget your white tube socks and fanny pack.

Which Smithsonian? It is actually a collection of Zoo's and Museums.
