Questions...
this engine is one stubborn bitch. Anyone have any common 5.3l issues at start up that I can check. The engine has been sitting for anout a year or more but most of the time its been in a garage. The engine is getting fuel and power. Fuses are good. Injectors are getting power during startup and the fuel pump is purging properly. It turns over just fine but it just spits alot and spins and spins. I am going to pick up plugs, wires and another ignition switch (the speedway motors I got is a POS). We will check spark on every cylinder tomorrow then check the routing of every PCM wire. Sigh!! Anyone have anything else we should test on the engine?

Your jeep should be greatful you aren't a hot rod guy.

HOLY CRAP! IT RUNS!!!!! sorry that we didn't get any videos up earlier guys. see if this works. I can't believe that is runs!!! :gitrdun:

So we got it running and this was the diagnosis. The buddy of mine that helped me finish up the harness was over yesterday and we troubleshooted crap all day. Basically, the fuel pump would purge but the injectors were not getting fuel despite the spark plugs getting spark. We checked the fuel rail for pressure (it seemed okay as it had good pressure but it smelt like old gas), took fuel pickup loose and hit pump to see if gas would flow (it flowed great), we checked power to the coil packs and injectors when the ignition was on (it checked out okay), power to the fuel pump, used noid lights to check the pulsing of the injectors (it was good too as they lit up properly), once we knew the injectors were pulsing properly we knew it had to be fuel related and that all the wiring was correct. from there we stripped down the fuel rail and injectors and cleaned them with carb cleaner then blew out some of the parts we could with my air compressor. Basically the old fuel was in the fuel rails and the crappy old gas had gummed up the fuel rail and injectors and it had to be cleaned out and drained. It took all day to figure out the solution but it runs like a champ now.

Awesome! What are plans for paint?

Thanks! I will be painting the jeep bright blue. Basically the same color it is, just a little brighter blue.

Hey Joe, thanks for posting that first video start up. That was the first start up. We had my buddy Michael's 6.0L air box and MAF sensor so it was getting too much air but it helped get it running.

I still have to go back in this week and soak the injectors in seafoam or something because it's still not running 100% right.

More work done today. We had to go back in and re-wire the turn signals. I had them flipped around. Now the bottom red (brake) lights only work for the brakes and the top amber lights only work for the turn signals. The middle clear lights will be setup to run as offroad lights. I'll be adding lights in the fenderwells front & rear also.

I made a custom radiator adapter since the lower hose had such a tight bend in it.

In place. We also added the coolant and a few other odds and ends. I have to take the fuel rail back off this week and soak the injectors in some sort of cleaner. I'm thinking about using seafoam to some them with because some of the injectors are still not firing quite right. I think they're still pretty clogged up. Anyone have any suggestion on what to use to clean injectors?

Apply voltage to the injector and spray carb cleaner through the injector with the straw. I have used a pencil eraser with a hole in the middle around the straw to get a bit of a seal with tham out on the bench you can watch the spray pattern this way as well

Thanks for the advise. I'll try that. I picked up some seafoam too. I plan on letting the fuel parts sit in that and soak. Then I'll blow them out with your method. Should be good to go then hopefully.

wow! this is the coolest looking build ever. i cant believe how much work has gone into this rig. i wish i had the metal working skills to do something like this. one day, i will have to undertake something as great as this. :D cant wait to see the end result!
BTW, im from Winston-Salem, so i hope to see you on the traisl sometime! maybe at uwharrie!

Glad you guys got it running! Freakin awesome. I guess I need to get started on mine and quit living through other peoples builds!

Really appreciate it! It's definitely a labor of love. I just hope it looks good and performs well when it's all done.

Thanks man! It's a whole lot cheaper to live through others builds I swear! That is a positive way to look at it. :D

Another productive weekend. It doesn't look like I got much done but I knocked out the intake which I've been dreading.

First off, I took the injectors back out this week and soaked them in seafoam for two days. The f'ers still didn't work. After two days, they looked like this. I ended up buying a set of used injectors from a friend of a friend for $50. I didn't figure that was too bad.

I wrapped the stainless fuel lines in nascar heat wrap when I put the fuel rail back on. Hopefully that will keep the fuel from heating up because they are very close to the manifolds.

I also got the dash back in. Still have to clean up and button up the wiring behind it but it's one step closer.

Then I had a little art project with some 4" exhaust tubing. :D This is what is left of the 90* and 45* 4" exhaust tube I picked up from summit racing.

Cut down, tightened the bends, welded back together, ground smooth and voila!

From the other side. You can see where I had to cut and re-shape to get the tight bend I needed. It also had to bend up then back down so it would clear the upper radiator hose. This is the final solution. It clears the hood and everything!

Painted metallic silver. I thought it looked better than black.

Another view. This view kind of helps you see where the bend at the radiator hose was needed.

So awesome! Enjoy it it's looking terrific.

Thanks man! I really appreciate it. I want it done so bad I can't stand it but when it is, I'll be wanting to build something else. You know how that always goes.
