Is it illegal to use heim joints in your steering linkages if you drive your rig on the road? I don't have them on my rig, but a friend is thinking of using them. I've heard it was illegal, does anybody know for sure?

Technically, any modification of the steering system would be in violation... But, he'll still pass inspection. There are cars that use sperical rod ends in the steering.. Just not many of them.

Make sure if they're not in double-shear, that he uses a safety washer so in a worst-case, the rod can't pop off the ball..

Rich is dead on about the oversized washer as back up for the ball pulling out. I'll just add use some ARP, f911 or the like kind of bolts in your steering links, I put f911's in mine 'cause I just wasn't gon'na go with a regular old grade 8 in it. It may be overkill but I don't want to worry about it, I'd rather bend a link than shear a bolt clean off.

My 2 cents :) .
