Help Me..

You cant built that lj for that price if you buy a stock lj and do the mods to it.

What's "built" about this jeep? Again, the pictures aren't much to go off of but it looks like a too tall short arm lift, cheap fenders and bumper, and a chrome grill overlay. All stuff that will probably be replaced anyway.

And to add something constructive I want an LJ as well...keep looking for the right one...havent found it yet.
For me that the engine and trans had to be replaced...I wonder what sort of deferred maintenance exists elsewhere
This, but also it depends on the type of mechanic they are taking it to. Many mechanics prefer to replace the whole unit instead of just fixing the problem. I've saved a family friend thousands of dollars because the dealer told them their WJ needed a new t-case at something ridiculous like $3000 (just needed a fluid change and to cycle the slip coupling), and a trans shop told them it needed a new transmission at $3000, when all it needed was a $40 accumulator plate that could easily be seen and fixed by dropping the pan.

With that said, what would cause BOTH the engine and trans to warrant replacement is an important question. And I'm of the opinion that I'd rather have an OEM install with wear than something rebuilt and swapped in by the guy who didn't use the right snappy-clicky parts and clean all the grounds and use loctite and torque everything to spec.

So judging from the comments I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say not only am I in the extreme minority in 'overpaying 10-20% for something you want', but also expecting you're going to have to sink another 30-50% in to it once you get it home. I'm not saying deals aren't out there, but if it's used and I want it, I'm taking the path of least resistance.

For me it all depends.
Is it a forever ride? If so and I want it...as long as its not stupid $$$ Ill jump.
But if its a "girlfriend not a wife" ride....I.E one I know I plan to sell in 2-3 years...price matters as to what Im going to get back on the exit.

Add me to that list of I want an LJ. It's what us XJ guys try and create when we go 4 link rear IMHO... As for engine transmission replacement could that not be known issues for the years the LJ was out. So I'm curious what year it is and weather it's an auto or manual...?

It's an automatic (found the ad on the facebooks)

That's like saying women are complicated and infuriating

Duh...but your other choice for both is some fake blowup doll or standing there with your dick in your hand. Choosing the real deal in both cases may mean getting screwed, but for those 11.5 seconds it feels great :flipoff2:
A dick in the hand beats two in the ass! Or however that saying goes.

Valid...I guess for me, if it’s something I’ve WANTED (key word for me), the decision has already been made it’s being kept. I personally, don’t tend to want something just for the sake of saying I have/had it. If it’s a toy/flipper I can make money on, prudent A to B vehicle, work vehicle, etc etc...then yeah, biggest bang for the buck. Otherwise, ‘Want’ is wallet based, not logic based for me.

How many ways can you twist that? (thats what she said?)

I agree with you Ben

I paid too much for my YJ but it was (in my mind) a holy grail purchase

It was the color I wanted, engine I wanted, trans I wanted, wheels I wanted, in as good a condition as I've ever seen, WITH factory air, hardtop, soft top, and a few other extras. And most of all, it was the one identical to the one I fell in love with in 1992.

When purchased it was thought of as a "casket car" (you're gonna bury my ass in this bitch)

After 2 years I still feel the same way. Will I next year? Who knows. If I sell it I won't make money but I knew that going in.

As I eluded to in my first reply...it's only overpriced if it's not worth that to YOU

Same about wanting an LJ and on the engine replacement. Although I think the 05-06 4.0s had a bad habit of eating the gears off the CPS but I'm not sure.

Thanks for all of the insight. It will be a forever ride, although 29 vehicles later I have a hard believing myself. I’m in around $10k for now, so likely won’t happen. The “add-ons” aren’t worth much to me as they would all be replaced. The drivetrain is nice but one day I would like to swap in a cummins or LS. Always thought the cummins swap was cool and with an LS, everyone likes to go fast.

Not to mention baby #2 is due in a week, I’ll be busy for the next couple months while my wife and I adapt to our new way of life!

Sounds like you want something high mileage before it gets a new engine and transmission, and without the modifications.

So, not that Jeep.

You're just lucky I told you how to fix your in-law's WJ.

Buy a stock lj and buy all the cheap stuff thats on it and you will have more in it than 12,500.00

But its all crap and would be thrown away anyway.

And I did by a "stock" LJ, 8 years ago. It had a budget boost, Olympic 4x4 step rails and grill guard. The first thing that happened was that crap came off.
