Hi all - new to the forum and was hoping someone could help me out w/ a few questions I had on purchasing an SUV from a private seller.

the seller is my buddy so i'm well aware of the state of the vehicle and all that. 4x4 2004 trailblazer ls, w/ 60k milles.

my questions are:

he has the title and i know it needs to be notarized, but do I need to be with him and we both go and get the title notarized together? or can i take the title signed by him and then go get it notarized on my own? or can he take the title and sign it and put all the info needed on the back and have it notarized and then just give it to me so i can take it to the dmv?

is there a notary at the DMV so all of this can be taken care of at once or should we go to the bank and get it notarized and fill out the Title Application and fill out in front of a notary there?

can i put a temporary plate on there to drive it to get it inspected if i have to get it inspected before i get tags?

i know i need to get it inspected, can i do that before i transfer the tags from my other car? or do i get the tags transferred at the DMV and then go get inspection?

quite a few questions i know, i just couldn't find the exact answers i needed, thank you very much to whoever takes the time to answer these questions for me.

thanks again,
Eric

The Notary and state's concern is forthe seller - they want to esnure the SELLER is indeed who they are supposed to be. They don't really care who you are.

The seller should be able to go to a notary and sign, and get notorization. The notary will probably want him to go ahead and at least write your name on it then too.
then he can give it to you, you take to DMV.

Or, oyu can both go to the DMV, the tellers there are almost always notaries themselves. just remember the $3 fee will require cash.

Dave ratlab nailed it...the tellers at the DMV have a killer side business going, collecting $5 per notarized signature.

Regarding inspection, if the current inspection is still valid, you should be clear to get it tagged in your name. Your next inspection date will be one year later. If there is no valid inspection, I think they will only give you a 3-day tag to go get inspection, then return to the DMV for the permanent tag.

Also, be sure to bring your insurance card when you do the paperwork.

1. I was told its best to sign that in the presence of a notary, but really, it just depends on your notary, and how they feel about it. Make sure you sign everything exactly as it says (Fill out your FULL name..) I was also told the DMV is kinda anal about that stuff, but really I dont think the lady I got took much time to look at it, but you never know.

2. There are notarys at the DMV, but definitely take it to your bank. That way you generally avoid the fee since you use that bank.

3. If the current inspection is valid, you'll be fine. You have a year to get it inspected.

4. You can simply take the plate off of another car you have (as long as its insured and inspected) and use that to go get your car inspected, and to drive around for a max of 20 days.

if you goto the bank to get the notary done, make sure you get everything notarized, or youll end up paying the $5 cash anyways...

Yeah good call there...

I ended up at two notarys to get all my stuff done. The first lady told us we didnt need to get the title application notarized. (you do...)

x3....you can d'load the title app. from the NCDMV website

Yup, just follow their step by step instructions and print off EVERYTHING it says. Im not sure if I needed all of that but I printed it off and got it all signed and had no problems once I got the title application finished

Somehow my DMV always finds something to charge me the $5 notary fee for. Last time, she didn't even pull out the damned stamp! Talk about a racket. $5 per title. Who's going to argue about that? Each notary probably does 20-30 titles a day, at least. I'll let you do the math. All cash. Are you going to argue with the woman who holds the success of your vehicle purchase in her hands?

Answer: YES

I make sure I always get my stuff notarized somewhere else, unless all else fails(usually selling something and I make purchaser pay notary not me).. and if I had it all notarized and they tried to charge me I would get her/his name and call the state and report that person.. they can loose there notary very easily especially if they are not following the rules..

thanks for the replies everyone. i've printed off the 3 docs, title app, damage disclosure and the risk insurance thing i think it was called (at work now don't have doc in front of me) and will just get every damn document notarized, haha, f;ing 5$ hornswagglers.

so I switched my insurance from the Acura over to the blazer, so I can just take my plate and put it on the blazer? meeting my buddy to get everything notarized and go to DMV on Friday so i can drive the blazer w/ the acura plate until then?
