ARDEN, N.C. – Some Greenpeace protesters have climbed a smokestack that towers over a power plant near Asheville.

Progress Energy spokesman Scott Sutton says a handful of protesters scaled the column at the Asheville Power Plant in Arden on Monday morning.

Sutton says the utility’s highest priority is to safely remove the protesters and protect the 400-megawatt plant that serves Progress customers in western North Carolina.

Greenpeace spokeswoman Keiller MacDuff says activists have secured themselves to devices including the coal loader and conveyer belts. She says the group thinks plants like the one in Asheville that use coal damage the environment.

Sutton says the group has also hung banners around the facility. He says police are working to remove the protesters.

they evidentally stormed the castle early this morning. They used ladders to scale the 16' fence. some have been arrested but I'm not sure about the stack people. I say go up and cut their banner down and lock them up there. Let them freeze it out for a while. I'm sure they'll be begging to come down in a week

UPDATE: All 16 of the Greenpeace activists at Progress Energy's Lake Julian
plant have now been arrested, including five that were on one of the
smoke stacks. News 13's Sherrill Barber will have the latest

It's surprisingly hard to make it ignite. Our maintenance guys drop weld embers on it all the time. You've got to pulverize it to a very fine powder to get it to burn. Think talcum powder, but black.

When I worked for Cat I had to go to Belews Creek coal fired plant to work on the D9 dozers from time to time. They have a set up that litteraly picks up an entire rail car full of coal and dumps it in the hopper. The dude that runs it said he caught these idiots trying to sneak in by riding in on the coal cars. they would cover themselves with coal to sneak in. He dumped 1 into the hopper and had to shut everything down to rescue him. Security was not at the post 911 level yet, but lets just say that the local cops didnt think it was funny and treated them a little roughly. I guess they figured the whiney lil' bitches were going to cry about thier treatment any way might as well kick a few asses.
