Hmmm, Obamacare lowered my healthcare cost?

My BCBS of Mich is going to go up ~$45 a month......and we are a union company. Thanks dumbobama.

All three of us in my family have their own health plans. My 6 year old son's individual policy went up $20 a month. In the same mailing notifying us of his new premium there was a letter explaining that the increase was due to Obamacare. We could opt out for a cheaper plan but loose the grandfathered status of his current plan and be subject to the obamacare. Amazingly Mine did not go up, yet. My wife's, high risk insurance, is through the state and increases every year based on age, for now.

My company pays for my high deductible HSA plan, but I contribute out of my paycheck to the HSA. This means I pay for all my own health care costs but at the BCBS rate, which is significantly lower than what the doctor "charges" to the insurance companies. The doctors write off the difference on taxes, it's not a bad deal for them. Whether the rates are the actual costs incurred, who knows?

The plan isn't bad for me because I'm fairly healthy, but paying more than $20 forces me pay attention to what random 'routine' procedures are suggested... I'm more likely to ask for the benefits/risks and decide if it is something I really want... and want to pay for. I think it encourages better consumerism and there is a maximum yearly amount you pay and after that you're 100% covered. The rate for spouses/family members did go up when the 'year' rolled over, which also comes out of paychecks.

Last I checked, the 'high deductible' and HSA plans will not survive once the new laws go into effect... they don't meet the minimum coverage levels or something.

I have Blue Cross at work & it just went from $120 a month to $280 a month & now my copays are more & my deductible went from $500 to $1500!

Well, I talked to BCBS today. My insurance did not go down(it went up 13.00). My sons iunsurance did go down though, as I guess he moved out of an age risk group.

Also, I am getting a refund check as the new healthcare plan reduces the amount of reserves that BCBS has to keep on hand. Instead of them keeping the money, apparently they are giving it back to its customers. (I assume this is because they would be racked across coals by Obama).

Don't get me wrong, I think the healthcare deal is not gonna work out. BUT, Obama care DID LOWER MY insurance rates. AND, I'm getting about a 350.00 refund from BCBS in the next few weeks.

Now, lets see how long it takes to skyrocket back up:)

Uh... didn't you just say that Obamacare had nothing to do with it?

sounds like they put you in the illegal immigrant rate bracket or the I have too many kids and cant work bracket. dont tell them otherwise or your rates will go up like everybody elses.

Obama care did it, or the change in your sons age made the difference in your rates. Which is it?

To clarify, I haven't talked to Blue Cross yet, they are closed for the day.
But, my monthly rate for myself and my 2 year old son for the last year has been 243.33 per month.
I just got my renewal letter and it is now going to be 213.11.
I didn't get any healthier or younger.
We shall see tomorrow when I can call. Has anyone else heard of this?

Obamacare had absolutely NOTHING to do with this. Premiums for an individual BCBS plan and reserves that an insurance company has to keep on hand are set by the state Insurance commissioner idiot...not by obamacare...BCBS of NC is a non-profit and any surplus goes into an account for NC to pay for some of the state programs...this is nothing new. BCBSNC was taking in too much and that is why there is a refund on what was put into reserves because they were charging more then the NC Insurance Commissioner deemed appropriate. Again, nothing to do with Obamacare whatsoever.
Also, just so you know, premium rates for a fully insured plan, which as a purchaser of an individual plan, yours would be fully insured are set by the state (i.e. NC Insurance Commission) not by the federal government and Obamacare does not change that in any way, so if your rates are going down it means that either your coverage is changing or someone on your plan moved into a lower risk category from an underwriting perspective. Again, NOT IN ANYWAY related to Obamacare.
The only provisions of Obamacare that are going into effect right now tend to run to a premium increase since in many cases it is an increase in coverage because of mandated services and having more/better coverage costs more not less.

(i.e. the things going into effect are no pre-existing for under age 19, preventive care must be covered with no cost sharing (i.e. copay or coinsurance), adds to the list of what is considered preventive care, removes all lifetime maximums on benefits, removes annual dollar limits on essential benefits...all these things are additional services that will have to be priced into coverage)

So, please don't give credit to Obamacare when you obviously don't know what you are talking about and how insurance truly is priced and underwritten.

Our rates went down $60.00 but the coverage isnt as good and we now have a $5000 deductible per person vs the $1000 we had before . Thanks Obama .

BCBS had to give you the money out of their reserves cause they are a non profit company and would get taxed on that money over their reserve limit.

just another one of those ways to raise tax revenue without raising taxes.

Just got a look at what my premium for 2011 through BCBS will be, they went up 81%. Keep in mind, I'm single and in good health.

Obviously. You are able to work and pay taxes, and you won't need much from the insurance companies. They call guys like you and me "profit."

I took my son to baptist the other week for a follow up from his surgery, $40 copay. Mexican beside me comes up to window and is there to see same surgeon. Receptionist ask if he has insurance....answer.....no insurance(mexican accent). Receptionist says OK you have a $10 copay. F*&% all you liberals who support this s&*t. I work my ass off and pay my 100% of my sons health insurance so all these illegals and medicaid MF's get the same healthcare for less.....AWESOME

Your Lucky TO Afford Insurance

Had a decent company plan up to 2009. When the houseing market collasped,[Thanks Bush], so did my company. They could no longer afford insurance & suggested HSAs. Some older workers cant find an insurer/ or cant afford premiunms.Example= BCBS coverage on me, 300 mo. Once it got thru underwriters, it went to 1000 mo. After checking with 8 companies, I took a HSA plan at 334 per mo. After 8 mo. they had an increase. I choose less coverage/w higher deductible, to keep same cost. 6 mo. later notified that NC approved rate increase, putting me at 410 per mo. I just CANCELLED my INS. My work situation is still a struggle, and I cant AFFORD it. Other Agents have told me Rates did go up to get ahead of Obamacar, just like the banks & credit cards have done. SO if you got INS, and can afford the preminums, your LUCKY. Count your blessings!:shaking:

I pay over $600 a month for insurance, and the way I afford it is by working my ass off and sacrificing other things. If it goes up again, I'll have to cut something else out. My parents are in the same boat you are. They cant retire because they cant afford insurance. If we didnt have to pay for all the people who are hear illegally and dont pay their medical bills, insurance companies could insure you affordably. I'm sorry if you think because I pay my health insurance I'm the bad guy? Go thank your local illegal aliens if you wanna complain

Hey Rodney...I saw one little flaw with your post, most of the legislation to allow willy-nilly lending stems back to about 1995...And I don't think Bush was da prez then. Keep in mind, most fall out or positive feedback from a prez comes 4-8 years AFTER they're out of office to feel the full impact of their presidency.

Beyond that, yeah, everyone is hurting. My folks have stellar insurance, and were paying $420/month for the family for the last 5 years. They went from having 7 on the policy to no just 5 as of June. Well they just got their premium quote, and it's going up $360/month...for a grand total of $780. When times are this tight, it's difficult finding an extra $360 or lower insurance costs, as they are getting older...yet still have a couple kids (teen and down). It ain't pretty.

Hey Bronco, Never said anyone was a bad GUY! Just saying I wish I still earned enough to pay these outragous preminums!
No Offense TO Anyone!!!!!!

None taken.......Ive been in your situation before and it sux!. I just wish people would understand that its impossible to spend your way put of debt. Also tough decisions have to be made. Sure if you are hurt, its nice to get care. But if you pay no taxes and live off the govt, why should you get ANY care at all? Hell medicaid gives vision and dental, none for me. Yet the patients still complain that the medicaid frames for glasses aren't stylish enough. Lets all vote these bleeding heart liberals out of office.

Make wellfare moms take birth control in order to receive a check, that would stop the another baby = another check syndrome. If you have been on welfare for over 2 years you lose your right to vote. If you get pulled over and you dont have any ID or green card, take you to jail and determine if you are a citizen. Non citizen=deportation

Amen!... very well said!

Mine went up $60 a month on myself and my daughter..my agent told me it was directly tied to health care reform. Good looking out for the middle class Mr pres.
I'm sure Juan says thanks!

Solution = Get rid of the Hypocratic Oath.
That will fix all these problems.
