I know it's been discussed before, I searched. However I know technology moves quickly in that industry and I'm not one to keep up with it. I need a system for my house , not sure if I need it monitored or not. I don't want to get into installing a bunch of crap myself, I'd rather just pay someone to install and monitor if the consensus is I need to. Go.

I'm not sure of the brand but a guy I work with has a system. Cameras are hardwired for power. Use wifi to transmit. Motion actived and send him a video to his email everytime they go off with live video

I know the big knock on home security systems is that 'a bad guy' will be in and gone by the time anyone can show up and do anything about it. Fine, the wife wanted one for a little more peace of mind...and if she is home, an extra 15 seconds to arm herself. We use Guardian...primarily because the research I did said all the big names you see on TV are garbage and Guardian ranks near the top of the top 150 security people in the country. Our service is all cell based, battery back up. Service is $50/month for break in and fire protection. Has an SOS code if you get jumped in your driveway and dragged inside. Didn't go with motion sensors because of pets, and didn't go with door cameras since they only have an 8 hour viewing. Can get their app and check whatever you want at the house to see what you did or didn't lock, or unlock the house for someone going over. We have all windows and doors monitored. Several 360* glass breaks around the house. Two way communication if one of the alarms goes off. The 'master entrance' gives you a predetermined amount of time to get in and put in the code. But if you let a dog out in the middle of the night at the wrong door, you're getting communication and probably a phone call. One time, I had faulty fire alarm with the system, went off when I wasn't home. Guardian couldn't get in contact with me, my wife or our third contact. 4 fire trucks in front of my house in a matter of 7 minutes, from the time the alarm went off, to the time the last fire truck showed up. For the money, I'm a big advocate especially if I know it makes the wife feel better and there actually a damn good response.

I've been out of the industry for, *gulp*, 12 years now.
You'd have to decide what you want: Detection, detection and response, video, etc.

I haven't see him around in a while but @burrellsjeep is still in the industry.
He has literally done everything in the alarm industry from sold, designed, installed, managed, owned, ran monitoring centers, etc.

And he stays on top of it. I'd ping him if you know Mike at all.

I got a really good camera guy my security guy recommended him, he's installed several I've recommended him to with no complaints. Great super clear monitoring from my phone I've got 11 Cameras between house and shop all viewable on my phone

Yippie dogs, mine beat any system at alerting me. You slow down by mu house and it sets them off. A big dog is nice for show but usually too quiet. Don't listen to what you see on tv, you can't just throw a dog biscuit and walk in, my dogs won't take a treat from me when my in-laws are in the house.

X2 got two shelties that won't even let the hummingbirds get to their feeders lol

I'll echo the yappy dog. 7lb yorkie sounds the alarm, then the re-enforcements arrive. Leaves, lizards, frogs, squirrels, cartoon animals, etc etc...don't stand a chance with these guys around:

Works great.
Know how many times police respond to a break in call and find fido dead or nowhere to be found?

Not so much about 'protection' but alerting (just like a home security alarm). Twice my dogs have been the reason I woke up to people breaking in to cars and once for trying to toilet paper my house.

Cameras doors alarms lights. They all only are there to scare off a criminal. If someone wants to break in they will. A camera may help catch them, but If they know it's there they can most likely avoid getting caught on it, or at least being seen enough to get usable information on the person.

I don't know, never heard one person I know of or seen once on the news about a break-in with a dead dog. Hear about break-ins with security systems all the time, rarely does the video catch any useful images, cops usually show up after they are gone.

It's pretty rare, but it does happen. Usually it's when the dog is older and sleeps more soundly. By the time the dog wakes up, the burglar is already in the home and the dog wakes up later and surprises the intruder. Often times the intruder is "trapped" in the house and fight or flight takes over. But you are right, most burglars do not go into the house with the intent of harming a watch dog, they will just pick another house.

Another reason I like having the dogs around and the security system. They're a pretty good deterrent. I'm sure there are numbers out there, I have no idea what they are...but if dogs barking or loud ass alarm can cause even one guy with a bad idea to keep walking or get the hell out of dodge once attention has been brought to himself...the $50/month is well worth it to me.
