Housing around Raleigh

Hey guys, I'm moving from Pittsburgh to Raleigh in the next few weeks, need some advice on where to look for a place to live. What I'm being told is it's quite a bit different than up here and everything is apartment complexes and townhouses, not a whole lot of homes on a few acres, at least not in my price range.

The price range is no more than $800/month and were bringing our cat, so pets have to be allowed. The girlfriend and myself will both be moving, so parking for 2 vehicles and I'll also have my truggy and trailer. So I'll need a place with room to store it, preferably with a garage.

I was looking around Durham, but come to find, it has a lot of neighborhoods that I'd rather not live in, per say. I'd like to stay around 20-30 mins from the 540/70 interchange, since that's where I'll be driving my 10mpg hog to every day...

What places to avoid, places to look into, where the hood is, etc... I'll be in Raleigh tomorrow and Saturday, plan on cruising around the area on Saturday to scope out some neighborhoods/areas.

Any help is much appreciated!

You might want to look into some of the areas just outside of Raleigh and drive in. I'm sure you could find something cheaper in Zebulon, Wendel, Clayton, Garner or places like that. As far as houses go, are you planning on buying or renting? If you plan to rent, you are going to end up paying more AND you build no equity. Also, as far as housing costs go, you can always take a look at http://www.zillow.com/

Good luck

None of that is within 45 minutes of 540/Glenwood. Most of it is >1hr away at rush hour.

I'm with Lee -- Creedmoor/Butner, might get lucky along 98 on the east side of Durham south of Falls Lake. There are still some cheap pockets in there.

best option is to search CL and a few rental sites, then drive around and see the areas, look for simple things like are the yards cut and kept up, is there blue tarps on roof etc :)

there are house with garages and trailer parking inside the beltline in raleigh just hard to find some.

for where you will be working I would suggest going north, or look around leesville rd, norwood rd, creedmoor rd area and north of that..

not the best area but and example of in raleigh

The area you need is Brier Creek. And it has housing in that price range if you look extremely hard. My step-daughter rented a 3 br 2 ba for $650 (no garage) but moved closer to us last year.
I got an excellent deal on my house (actually I stole it) in Northeast Durham right on the lake 3 years ago. 2br/1ba w/ 2.5 acres and 4-bay shop. Actually touching Federal land but I can hear the boats. It's a pocket of majority white people. And I can be at 540/70 in about 20-25 minutes in traffic. 10-15 minutes no traffic. The further up the road you go towards Butner it seems the more pricey it gets. The house next to me is for rent but dude is asking $1,000/mo. and it has no garage. I think that's the reason it stays available so often. He's 78 y.o. and won't budge on price? I bought his mom's house and our relationship ain't the greatest.
There's an 81 acre farm for sale by owner (dying of cancer and has no children) right near me with pond and 2 houses??? But the land probably ain't worth what the old fellow is asking because Durham has restricted the area (Falls Lake Watershed) to 3 acres min. per lot 6 years ago. And the State of NC is planned to take over FLW in 2020. Falls Lake is in Durham County but feeds water to 500,000+ in Raleigh. And Durham gets their water from an old rock quarry that has plenty of water. Big mess coming down up here...

That's what I've been doing, well, both of us have been hunting CL and trulia. Found a similar place same distance from st Augustine, on the opposite side. Beautiful interior, small yard, spot for trailer, woods along one side and behind, but in a shitty neighborhood... I'll have to start using zillow, since it uses a map feature, kinda like trulia. Pretty much looking for an older neighborhood. Thanks for all the quick replies too guys!

I live in Durham about 8 miles from 540/70 and my area is quite nice (I am off 98 and Mineral Springs, but our area would rent for more than 800). There are bad pockets in any major down. Like others have said, the big issue is going to be HOA's/Apartments and trailers.

Try hotpads.com also

So the easiest route would be finding a garage to rent and keep my junk there?? I know certain counties here in PA don't take a liking to things like buggies or "junk" looking cars in driveways and or cars on jack stands are illegal(unless they're covered with a tarp, where it could be a "car shaped pile of wood"). Kind of why I want something rural, that I can pull my trailer next to/behind the house/apartment and possibly a garage big enough to store the truggy(which isn't very big)...
