Worth changing from Alltel to AT&T? I really, really like how the internet works on the iPhones and the other features they have, but are they worth it?

I'm sure Caver will chime in as he has a company one and had to set up like 23 for the company. but if he misses this one, check with him.

I know a couple guys with them and the phones are definitely cool. At&T's coverage doesn't seem as good as Verizon around here is the only thing I know of as a negative.

I used to have AT&T and never really had issues.. but they did not allow us to share minutes, etc..

So I switched to Verizon and the only advantage I found was at Tellico my verizon phone actually worked when others provider phones did not..

but I was happy with service with both around triangle area

oh and Yes the iphone does have some cool features

I've got verizon and just got the LG Dare. It's pretty much an iPhone, but you can't browse the internet like you can on the iPhone. Other than that, it's pretty similar. Touch screen, screen rotates, good camera, etc. etc. Plus, Verizon is the best service I've used and I've used a bunch. Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, and Nextel.

We've had 27 for the past month. Outside of battery life (appears to be a global issue, not just ours) we haven't had any problems.

I agree that AT&T's wireless coverage just plain sucks. It was this way with the menagerie of previous phones (Treos, Crackberries, BJs, etc.) and nothing has changed since. No huge surprise to anyone here!

I changed my families phones (3 total) to Verizon back in Feb. Now the phones actually work at my house (inside the W-S city limits) and most other places I've been since. Like Ken said, AT&T & Nextel/Sprint used to die *before* Murphy... imagine my surprise to find Brent talking to his wife at the top of School Bus on a Verizon phone (which also had full bars at my house). The switch wasn't a hard decision! :flipoff2:

The iPhone, while "cool", is still just a phone with a bunch of junk built in... not worth the 3bills each we paid for the executive staff to be all cool & trendy.

For internet i think its great. I just got the new AT&T LG VU touch screen. Its an Iphone knock off and I think its pretty lame. Its supposed to be 3g, but internet is as bad as dial up. I have had other providers, Alltel being my least favorite. But the Iphone is a great phone, if you can afford it. Also, go to youtube and watch how you can hack the software to run whatever you want on the phone. Pretty cool, but will void any warranty you have most likely..

On another note, insurance with Alltel is bogus! I remember I bought one of the first MP3 player phones with camera and all that jazz and payed somewhere around $350. I lost it 6 months later in a car wreck and had insurance on it. Since the phone went out the window when the car flipped it was gone. They wouldnt insure it since i didnt have a phone to bring in. Same if you get water damage to the phone. So they pay up to $50 for me to get the same phone, and i had to sign another 2 year contract... Thats when i went elsewhere.

well the key factor for me is the way the internet is used, i feel that for the size of the phone it works perfect and is easy to navigate around. I have done a few posts recently on my GF's iTouch which is why i am beginning to lean towards that phone... and the fact that my current phone was found in a dumpster with the last call being made in May of 04, if another phone navigates the internet that easily that would probably be an easy decision, especially if its with alltel.

Phone

I dont have any personal experience with the iphone but I just changed to Sprint so I could get the Instinct. Its just like the I phone and as a matter of fact beat the iphone in every competition they were in. I love it. Take a look at it.

I've had an iPhone for a few weeks and cingular/AT&T for about 8 years. My thoughts in no particular order.

Coverage - Seems about the same as everybody else. I get coverage in Verde field when nobody else does. I got coverage at Crawfords campground when I stood on top of my buggy. On the other hand it drops calls at this one spot on Rt 55 in Apex almost every time.

Exchange/email - I walk into my building, it synchs up with the wifi, and all my new meeting invitations start chiming. The email synchs reliably, I've never had an issue and that's more than I can say for my old Palm/Treo. On the downside, typing email on the virtual keyboard in painful and it's no comparison at all to a real keyboard. (I with with computers and type nearly as fast I can talk.) I mostly use it for keeping the inbox clean.

Web surfing: This is about as good as I can imagine it to be without a bigger screen. The multi-touch expand/collapse idea was brilliant. The "double touch to make this column full width" is perfect for cruising online forums like this. I use it all the time.

GPS: It's pretty cool and apps that build on it like yelp make it cooler. I can look for nearby restaurants and reviews. However, until it gets turn by turn directions that follow you it won't meet it's full potential. I can get turn by turn directions and my current location but I can't get the "turn left in 100 yards" that I want. It's rumored to be coming.

iPod: This works well. It's just what you would expect.

Pandora: I love this app. It's kind of like Satellite radio but free and tailored to your tastes.

Phone: I came from a treo, which was a decent PDA but a terrible phone. In comparison the iPhone is awesome. However, I still think for just phone usage some of the flip phones can't be beat. They protect themselves in your pocket while staying small and the match the size of your head when in use. Also, you don't have to fuss with key locks.

Battery life: I can't imagine wearing it out in a day but you pretty much want to charge it every night. It's not like a normal phone where you'll charge it friday and be sure it's fine all weekend. I listen to it as an iPod/Pandora in my truck so that tends to keep it pretty charged.

Other apps: I like the weather, stocks, and games. As you get into the better phones the games are actually pretty cool.
