A little after 1 am, We are awaken by a 100 plus pound dog jumping on top of us in bed, scared to death of the thunder and lightening that's come thru our area. So now as often I am, I am awake, with a dog at each side, panting from fear, as close to this putor chair as they can possibly get. Is it just our dogs that are big wussies? The cat, Sam, doesn't seem to be bothered at all by it. Just curious

It's not just your dogs. Our little dog is the same way. So is the cat. If we don't know there's thunder around, we'll know because the two of them act like the sky is falling. Our bigger dog doesn't seem to notice, but I'm not sure she's got a brain in her head at this point.

My lab Murphy is the same way. As soon as a storm hits, you can usually find her huddled up in a corner somewhere. Now my younger dog, doesn't really seem to mind it.

My dog did that when she was young. I just let it know the storm was not scary.. and did not comfort them during that time. (cruel I know)

It did work. We were headed to the beach when a storm rolled over.. it was raining and hailing so hard we had to pull over. My dog was stretched out in the backseat. she was not awake b/c she was scared... but she was irritated because the storm was too loud to let her go back to sleep.

Yeah, my coon hound is a bit timid of storms. She doesn't freak out, she just kind of stays close to me until the storm is over. What PurpleTJ said was probably the best you can hope for, just don't comfort the dog. Just act calm and carry on as normal. With luck they'll catch on that it's no big deal.

May be too late for that. Semi is 6 years old, Leroy is 7. Both of them come to us this way. It's not just thunder, fire crackers, gun shots, and they act the same way. Semi we have had 4 years, got her from someone who said they didn't have time for her. Awesome animal! Minds great, great temperament, no issues. She listens better than most kids, including my own.
Leroy come to us from the local Friends for animals. A no kill shelter. My daughter works there and he had been there a while. It's hard for them to adopt out older big dogs. He is 100 plus pounds, and does have some energy when he wants to play. A retriever he is not, I don't think he has ever been taught the game of fetch. His issues are he likes to be a road block. Hasn't quite caught on to the let the human by idea. Also, he isn't an alpha male, has never marked his territory, but thinks doorways are something he must be first through, and he has to go through them at top speed! But he is a very loving, great tempered animal otherwise.

Weve got a 9month old lab mix, she is scared of water hoses, other dogs (even little ones), and most anything that moves, but storms don't seem to bother her. She will go fetch in thunder and lightning, but will run the long way around the yard by the trees if it is raining.

My Husky loves the rain. Never hear anything from him at all. He just goes by a window that is open and looks. Sometimes when there is thunder he will go to his spot that he goes to when he want to go outside. He is crazy.

My Shih Tzu sleeps in a kennel so she is a little scared sometimes. We dont show her any attention when there is a strong so she will get over it soon I am sure

My black lab has no issues. However, he is gun trained so hes used to loud noises, so I guess a little thunder and lightening isn't that big of a deal to him...

Tomkin, the cat, sleeps right through it also...

OK your dogs are big wusses, hell play with em a little when they start freakin out, who knows. One exception... we lived near the main street in Lewisville ( a suburb of W-S) who puts on a nice fireworks display on the fourth..... Marge flipped the hell out every year.

I have a friend who has a dog trained for hunting. Problem is, he freaks out over gun shots. He's so bad that he associates camoflage clothing with gun shots and freaks out.

Hehe, they must give that same training to senators from Kalifornia and Massachusetts...

a hunting dog that freaks out over gun shots???

Our 9-year old Golden Retreiver couldn't care less about storms, guns, other dogs, pretty much anything but train whistles.......howls like a banshee.

Funny.. my 2 cats don't seem to give a damn. :flipoff2:

I wouldn't know what my dogs think of storms, they're OUTSIDE rain or shine!
FYI-They live in a 10,000sq. ft. fenced area, dog houses, shelters, trees, shrubs, etc.

What's cool is they usually know when a storm is approaching 10 minutes before you here the first thunder. They can either here the thunder better or fell the barometric pressure drop.

Yeah, I wondered about that too. I do know when I go to his house, the dog barks madly and runs from me, when I'm wearing my camo field jacket.

LOL..must have been the same storm here in Hudson. About 2am my girlfriend sets straight up in bed freaks me out and i here my female black lab getting into the shower. She gets so worked up she has chewed the door frame off the laundry room door off. Took her to the vet and gave her Xanax. Hell ive got those...:)
