Is this a for real debate?

Also have a parent from SC, so rice with lots of things (including lots of bean dishes and stews) but I've never thought to have it with chili.

Cornbread is like barbecue to me... It's almost all good and I'll eat it. I, personally, usually put a little sugar in fried cornbread but not in baked. Baked corn bread has creamed corn and shredded cheese in it.

Unrelated, I make a really good 'Indian rice' with coconut oil & milk, turmeric, and green peas that I serve with my Chicken Tikka Masala. My kids also like it when I make rice pudding with rum raisins.

I like baked cornbread with a little sweet and heat. I like fried cornbread and hush puppies with a little onion flavor.

I actually prefer chili without beans but will gobble down the legumes with wild abandon if offered to me. I would eat the rice in chili because I love rice and I love chili and it sounds goodā€¦

I will admit I have eaten real cooked banana pudding with Nutter Butters instead of Nilla Wafers and I loved itā€¦

For me it was always rice in chili as a kid and now as an adult. Wife is a cornbread girl but has tried the rice and says it's ok. She had never heard of it before me. I know I'm stepping into a fastball when I say this but I never developed a taste for cornbread.

Oh and I'll still add the fresh chopped onion, sour cream and cheddar.

You're right though...if I had a nickel for every time I heard 'oh...you just haven't tried my cornbread, yet'...I'd be a wealthy man. Most of those instances I leave feeling like I would have rather shoved the corn cob up my ass than tried that little yellow flavorless brick of grit.

Same. I feel I've tried enough "best cornbread in the world" to say I still wont like it.

"little yellow flavorless brick of grit" exactly

Chili without beans: condiment. Goes on burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc. Chili with beans: meal. Eat with cheese and crackers/chips/tortillas.

x2. I would argue that a good chili doesnt need the filler (cornbread/rice/chips/crackers) to thicken it up... maybe just a little sharp cheddar or pepperjack. I do like the cornbread on the side though.

Also, white chicken chili, is NOT chili. It might be a good soup, but its not chili.

Now for the real debate....does sugar go in cornbread, or no?

I like my cornbread sweet, and with pieces of corn and jalapenos/spice in it. But as long as it isnt dry, i am not too picky.

Wife makes the very best cornbread. Does it this way, with corn and jalapenos. lots of jalapenos

Im the opposite.
I want my cornbread so dry it instantly sticks to your throat and you need water to wash it down

I grew up eating it over rice.
First time having anywhere other than home I looked for the rice and plates. Took a bowl, tried it, and thought I was going to die.
It was then I learned of things called spices.

wtf is wrong with you?

I don't kow that's I've ever had "rice and chili" per se but I can see how it would happen and be appealing. Very possibly originated or is popular in another country.
I mean, a lot of Indian (dot not feather) meals are basically this. Well not with beef ;-).

I like chili, I like rice. I like spicy red beans and rice. I see no reason I would not enjoy this meal and eat the shit out of it.

If you are cooking it to put in soup or chili, I like the dry crumbly stuff... Otherwise, i will choke it down, with plenty of butter/honey/jam.

Dry and crumbly is what grandma made.
When we got married - my wife who never ate corn bread growing up - made me a cornbread for our first Sunday dinner. It was the Jiffy Corn Muffin sweet stuff. (Which by the way, sweet corn muffins are fantastic) She was so proud. Of course I told her how good it was.
A month or so later she made another and while eating it she said "I really like cornbread but mine is nothing like Nana's"....I got her the dry crumbly recipe.
Happines has ensued ever since. And we are going on 21 years strong. So dry cornbread and WAP -FTMFW :D

I am definitely a cornbread and chili person, not even going to think about ruining it with rice! Don't get me wrong, I love some good sticky rice with beef bulgogi...I always think back to my dad and how he simply hated rice, couldn't stand to even see it! He served 2 tours in Vietnam and said after seeing so much of it and how they grew it...he would damn near vomit at the sight
