It's ok.... We're the EPA

Yeah, nice thread on Pirate about this one as well. I think the EPA should be fined and the money should be sent to all the local municipalities downstream of the river for the cleanup efforts.

If a private company did it there would be protests and riots and the company would be fined billions of dollars. And it would be the main story for weeks on all the media. Tell me there is not two sides.

The CEO of the EPA should be villainized and brought up on charges.

That was my point exactly. I'm surprised that any thing outside of the local media in that area reported on it. All I have seen though has been from websites. No television coverage by any of the major news outlets that I've seen so far.

It's a headline on CNN, I'm sure it will show up elsewhere soon

Is no one bothered by the fact a private company mooched all the minerals out of the mine...abandoned it...and now the tax dollars are responsible for cleaning this up?

thats how mining works... actually thats how pretty much all businesses that run off natural resources work...

Isn't that the definition of mining, mooching/digging/extracting minerals out of the ground? How do you go though life without the benefits of mining? What is the magical/responsible answer to mining? Are you prepared to live in a world without mining, and if so, why do you own a 4x4? I assume it isn't wooden.

Without details, how in the hell do you do such a thing accidentally??? Any details released yet? Or will the details be covered up for good?

I never said mining was bad. Not once. So I'm not quite sure where you pulled that from. I was stating the fact the company once they finished mining they clearly didn't properly close/seal the mine otherwise the EPA wouldn't have been there to begin with.

Nope... None that I've read or seen. Somehow they popped the plug. What gets me is they already knew the toxicity of the water, but after releasing it isn't the river, waited more than 24 hrs before notifying the local public works. Yes the company that created the problem should have cleaned it up, but once the EPA steps in they accept liability. Especially when they are at fault for the leak. Seems to me the pond was holding fine till they stepped in.

Ive read that the mine had been closed since 1923!

maybe a superfund site since it closed in 1923?

Exactly correct. This mine was closed/abandoned over a half a century before any of the modern-day regulations went into effect (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 [CERCLA]). It will take SuperFunds to clean that mess up now.
