Question for App students..or Lees mccray..or one of those schools up there.

A few years back,A friend and I were hiking Linville falls. We Walked the trail wich turned into plank boards and went out onto a lookout stand.Which was around 40 ft from ground at the end. Seemed like the end of the trail for us. But suddenly I said to a friend...hey lets scale down this tree thats growing up close to the railing, and go down to the river, make a left and hike upstream on the banks and eventually we will be back at the falls, except at the bottom this time.

Ok we hiked down the mt. and made our way back to the falls. When we got there i looked up and thought I SAW A SUICIDE JUMPER....turns out the guy was ok and had planned the what, 70 ft jump+/- it was crazy to see...I thought ole boy was dead for sure. Turned out , he was a part of a hazing/initation deal for one of those schools. He come out unscathed and freezing wet.
Anyone else ever heard of this? It was CRAZY COOL to see.

Whats the scoop on this..without getting anyone into trouble.
Does anyone know of this?

I know its dangerous as hell to be jumping off the falls. I have seen some people do it at many different falls in NC. A girl from my school jumped off a fall and hit rock in about 4 feet of water and crushed her whole bottom section of her body. She got f-ed up pretty bad. I will swim in the falls but no jumping for me.

Yeah, I climbed up to where this guy jumped from. You gotta hit a bullseye the size of a dime, at least thats what it looks like from up there. Dude said it was almost 30 ft deep where he went in at...but the hole was only about 35 ft in circumference though.
He said it was an intiation for some frat house.

It happened before my own eyes...yes very scetchy indeed. This may be a hush hush type of event for that particular frat...idk.

I've jumped almost everything around here. Compression wins for scenery and safety hands down. The bridge on Watauga lake is also a good one. Trashcan, snakepit, Elk river are all fun as well.

Linville?
Really?
Im not sure what youd hit...Im not sure of a whole to support it.

Snake pit and the dam on 105 are pretty fun, haven't been to compression yet though.

bad idea

we had to rescue a guy there a few years back, his buddy jumped but he backed out, they charged both of them for jumping off them and since it was on us park lands they were fedral charges,I've heard of several people getting arrested at elk river falls on the wataga river for the same thing

Not exactly related, but a girl I went to high school with jumped into a shallow pool, broke her neck, and was paralyzed.

Trashcan's fun... Elk River is dangerous.. A guy hit a rock, crushed vertebrae, etc. etc.

As for jumping 70+ feet... that's just plain stupid and unless you know what you're doing it's asking to be hurt or paralyzed.

I'll stick to where I know there's deep water.... 100'+ deep here...

We used to jump off the one at Blues Creek at the old rock quarry.

me off a bridge up near royal blue a few years back... was only ~40' maybe...

Funny when we pulled up and started walking out, all the boats nearby started lining up and yelled all clear :) Guess they knew the deal....

Damn yager....I bet that hurt the boys, huh?

And by the way everybody...I am not thinking about jumping off ..I was just wondering if anyone else knows anyone who has jumped at Linville.

Never heard of anyone jumping off linville falls, but some down the river from there.
This is my best jump ever. Negril, Jamaica- We had to jump off the boat, swim into the cave, find a stairwell that came out in the floor of the bar on the cliff. Make the jump and go back up to the bar, they had a free Red Stripe waiting on you. The rum punch on the boat did me in:lol: The second time I jumped left me with some insane bruises, I'm glad I didn't let the wife take pictures.

There was an old quarry in my hometown, East Lyme CT. I guess it was 50 ft or so. The key was to wear your chucks (converse allstars), helped with the landing, plus hike-climbing up sucked barefoot.
There was a little one in Troy, NY like 30ft, and a killer 70ft one in Stockbridge, Mass. we'd hit during college, good times :huggy:

Ricks' is an awesome place! I jumped from some of the lower ledges. The locals jumping out of the trees(on top of the cliff) were insane. I've got a couple good stories from there:beer:
