KDE vs Gnome

I prefer KDE as well. No real reason other than it seems more intuitive.

KDE...not even close...

I use Gnome because the look and feel fits my style better. KDE pissed me off early, and I'm just not tempted to go that route anytime soon...

BUT... KDE has better apps and I have half the KDE libraries on my boxes because of amarok, kde education games (for Gabe), etc.

Also, I used to work with a guy that's a KDE celebrity because he ports it all to OSX. Last summer he was paid to go speak in Scotland.

BTW, if you want to start a fight, ask that on the TriLUG mailing list.

PS. I just changed from Fedora to Ubuntu and I am amazed at the quantity of debian packages out there. Amarok, Stellarium, bitpim, kismet, wireshark are all in the top 5.

what are these KDE-Gnome things you all are speaking of.

I am using Ubuntu right now and have been very happy with it

That would most likely be Gnome then, unless you installed from the Kubuntu cd or installed the kubuntu package.

Gnome works well for me, as I haven't used kde for years... maybe I'll try it out today.

I Kan't stand the faKt that everythinK in KDE has to have a faKKing K in it.

So for that reason, and that reason only, it's Gnome. ;)

Wow, you're not kidding.

It's almost to the point of extreme annoyance.

Almost distracts from KDE being horrifically slow on this laptop for some reason (dual core, 2 gig ram, etc). Even typing lags behind.

So far, KDE is :poop:, but I'll refrain from final judgment until after I figure out WHY it's acting up.

I ran Slackware from about release 7.0 thru 10.1 and always preferred the KDE desktop. Now am running Ubuntu (Feisty) and prefer Gnome 10/1 over KDE. Also, have xubuntu set up on a 486 dinosaur (Win98 machine), in the shop, and it also does quite well. Personally, I have experienced fewer bugs with Gnome than with KDE.

The first time I installed Linux, it came on two floppies that I downloaded from a local BBS. I couldn't figure out how to do anything with it, but never lost interest. Finally when Slack 7.0 came out I managed to get a Linux system up and running. Today Linux is my sole operating system and my son is a Unix Systems Administrator for a Fortune 500 Company. Good work Linus! :)

The first time I really used Linux it was on a single floppy and still is. The company I worked for had no money for even used routers but we had some 486's laying around collecting dust. The software is still around and maintained as well.

I'll check that out Joel. A LOT of stuff people buy these days has another distribution called puppy linux on it. I have a few friends that talk about embedding it in different projects.

FWIW. My folk's Sony TV came with a printed GPL license, because it used Linux.
