I had to run up to our church about 8pm tonight, just a couple of miles up US-1. As I sat at the stoplight waiting to turn onto 1 (McDonalds at Tramway, if you know the area), I turned on my scanner, and heard a dispatch go out for a wrong way car in the Northbound lanes of 1, seen at the Hwy 42 exit (couple of miles up, that's where I was headed). So...there were only 2 off us going North from the light. I was watching hard -- and it was still hard to pick the car out against the oncoming headlights, even though it is a divided highway. I'm glad I had a clue he was coming.

I slowed and put it on the edge of the grass when I saw him coming...white caddy...right turn signal on...only doing about 40-45 mph.

Anyway, I was listening on the scanner, several city cops were trying to located him. They were way north of where he was...so I punched in 911. Told them I passed the guy just North of the highway patrol station, and that at that minute, he had probably already reached the first Tramway stoplight. Didn't hear dispatch update the location, but figured maybe it went out on the data terminal/MDT. Nope...about 5 minutes later, they were still trying to locate him...well north of where I had seen him, maybe 4 miles north. Guess that message never went past the operator.

Anyway...that's the best story I got tonight.

I think that's a problem everywhere, there are some good tellecommunicators and there are bad ones. Sometimes they don't realize that every bit of information is important.

I saw a driver going the wrong way on 540 doing better than 75 around 9 or 10 o'clock one night. He would veer off to the median as a car came sometime he would catch the grass and get squirrely. Called *HP not sure what came of it.

I called *HP on a wrong way driver on 421 near Greensboro about 3am one morning. This was back around 1999. He was the only other car i had seen for a long while. Telecommunicator was't too interested in a location, just kept asking for a description of the car

I had enough and told her it really didn't matter what it looked like, they could just pick any car they found going north on the southbound side at 3 am and give them a ticket and I'd be happy.

Seems like this is happening a lot on US-1 in Sanford. Been a couple of accidents already because of it.

There is something really wrong on US-1 in this area...another wreck last night, on US-1 near Southern Pines, 2 killed. Wrong way driver, yet again. Headed S in Northbound lane.
