How old were your kids when you started taking them to uwharrie? I'm trying to figure out how soon I will be able to take my son on a day trip and hit some of the easier trails. He'd be in a car seat in the back of a tj. He loves riding for in the jeep and hitting bumps but don't know if he'd last at uwharrie.

Most people I've talked to say 5, but I think this has been discussed on here before with others saying they've done it earlier... I'm hoping my Jeep will be done by the time mine is 5.... lol probably won't be though....

I've take my friend and his son to the flats and wheeled hard. He is three and is always asking when we will go again. @McCracken took his girl to windrock last time we went I think shes 5 and had a good time

If they're as big as Levi and Jameson hell they can drive out there at 6 months. Only reason Jameson hasn't been yet is he can't fit in the Toyota.

I took my daughter at 1.5yrs, in car seat, used rolled up towel to keep her head from flopping back and forth, they're gonna fall asleep, just need to be more careful in the rough stuff.
the amusement comes on the ride home, they're so used to the "vibromatic lounge chair" of the constant truck vibes ( tires and road ) My daughter would wake up every stop light thru Cary and immediately crash again soon as engine revved and we started moving again.

unfortunately that was the last time I was able to go wheeling........she is 13 now.

Most of my family started taking their kids between 6-9 months and all the kids love it. They range from 2 years old to 14 years old now. The 2 year old pitches a bitch if his dads TJ leaves the house without him in it. If they go out in the TJ it's not good enough for him until they hit something ruff for a minute. Could be just crossing a ditch but for the 2 year old he has to think they are Wheelin.

My son is almost 2 but most of the time when I go I'm the only one in my vehicle. I know there is a 0% chance he's gonna wait until he is 5. If I try and put anything i.e. a towel it will last maybe 10 seconds before it's on the floor.

It seriously all depends on what becomes "normal" to a kid. They adapt surprisingly well to almost anything. The older they are, the more scared they will be the first time. And if you terrify them the first time, you won't likely get them out there again. But if you take them there very young, while they don't have a fear factor built up, then you've got them hooked.

Sara's probably a bit of an exception... she went to her first ECORS race when she was a month old!

She was 6.5 months old when we got the NC4x4 Jeep, so the inaugural Veterans' Ride was her first time at URE. Robert was probably 4 or 5 months old (3 months at his first URE work day but he stayed in the Dodge with me). William was probably 9 or 10 months old when we found the TRALHUGR Jeep. I sat in back with the older two for a while and definitely used rolled up towels and hoodies to keep heads from bouncing around too much.

My daughter went with just me in the Sammi to URE when she was 5 and could brace herself and handle the bouncing around. Like was said she kinda fussed about the rougher stuff though. Now @ 9 she has been to some parks in the buggy with me and will ride for most anything but i try not to get wild with her in there. She loves going down obstacles, I think she knows I hate that and capitalizes on my unconfortableness lol. I think it is based on the child, the earlier they start the more "normal" it is to them.

My daughter was about 8-9 months. Strapped in a car seat with a airplane pillow around her neck. Just going slow riding.

My son was 2 months and he rode in one of those carriers you strap onto you. My wife wore it and she was strapped into the seat and my son in the carrier and she held his head to keep from rocking. He slept most of the time as the rumble from the exhaust and the slow rocking going down the trail probably just made him feel comfortable.

I have been taking my son off road ever since we switched from a rear facing car seat to a forward facing one. I dont remember what age that was, but I remember at first he cried a few times on steep inclines but got used it to really quickly. He is almost 9 now and still loves going wheeling. He talks about what kind of 4x4 he will one day have. It kills me when he says he wants a jeep, but I guess I have to love him no matter what, lol.

I want to take my son to URE, but only have a stock '86 F150 4x4 SWB 5.0 4-speed.

Any route or series of beginner trails?

I have always ran the rocky loop to Kodak & daniel a few times.

Well...well... well...my wife wheeled with me when she was pregnant!! So I win!!!

Same here, with both Robert and William. We rode trails at URE the Saturday of the Veterans' Ride in 2012 and William was born that Monday. :bounce:

Robert has already planned out the tow rig he needs for his electric gator and everything LEGO he builds has to have a winch.

from what I hear, you can wheel URE in a honda civic these days.

My wife and I decided very early on to wait until our son turned 6. He turned 6 last November, but I took my Samurai apart late last summer. My Samurai probably won't be finished for 2-4 yrs, so I am planning on buying a TJ as soon as I get my shed finished and have room in my garage for another vehicle. I will then take him to Uwharrie.

My wife has a CRV awd...close enough?

No, last time I went with the Wheelin Dixie guys, I nearly stood my Bronco on its back bumper going up toward Kodak rock. Wife did not enjoy the ride.

Trying to convince her I will take it easy with the boy in the truck (she knows I am an idiot at times)....

Kodak's closed and everything other than Daniel and Dickey Bell are passable, in good weather, for a stock JK.
