it may take a little while to bust thru all those roots, but with the blade, you can cut/fill to a net zero. (may kill the trees, may not)

Where to get fill dirt cheaply? free?

I like the dig half, fill half idea. Minimizing what i Need. But will probably still need dirt.

I think what i am initially planning here is to build foundation like trenches. Find the highest point and get all the other measurements. And split the differences and dig down minimally so i have level surface to lay 4x4s down. then build up my wall to the highest point and then fill. Seems to be the easiest idea

If you want to haul the dirt, you might find a listing on Craig's List. If you need it delivered, call the local Quarry, & ask for a couple of names/ haulers. Even some local small haulers run adds in CL & local Advertisement papers.
