I have a TH400 in my K5, long story short I have killed it about 3 times now, this last time in much less than 1k miles. I am finally done with the previous builder and am now looking for somewhere in the Raleigh or surrounding area that can build it for me. Preferably someone who does racing work or any other heavy duty applications. Anyone have any names for me? Thanks!

Damn, how shitty of a tranny guy do you have to be to not be able to build a th400...

Dont know anyone near raleigh, but if you are in the Charlotte area hit me up, Id be glad to take care of it for ya.

Theres a machine shop in wendell that rebuilds cars and he might do trannys im not sure but its worth a call

I use Teds Automatic Transmision. I have never had a problem with their work and they will usually give you a warranty. Ask for Marvin and tell him I sent ya, He'll treat you right.

talk to Gurney at Rose and Sons Transmission shop. they are in downtown Raleigh and have been there since 40 was a dirt road.

good stuff- good luck

ok so he works well?

apex transmissions is the best place around danny the guy that owns it is a good friend tell him u know drew he should take care of u

does he work on old model and newer model trannys? can he add stronger parts and beef them up?

What is the best engine shop to take a motor to that someone wants to beef up and jazz up with some more HP mods and such????? Thanks

I recommend Rose and Sons in Raleigh....just off Saunders, I forgot the street. They did a good job on mine, lots of gray hair around.

I am sure if you bring the upgraded parts to Teds they will put them in for you. They have done work for 4wheel of Raleigh, at least when Lynn owned it. FWIW, Teds is a family operation and they have been around over 20yrs that I know of.

I thirds Ted's Trannys. Great guys, great work.

i'll reccomend ted's also. they do good work.

Well thanks for all the responses. I have a bit of a dilemma though, all of ya’ll recommend ted’s, however he is the one who built it the first 2 times. Ted built a 700R4 for me a long time ago which worked fine. I then upgraded to a TH400 I found used and ran it for a while with no problems. It then went out of course, so I took it to ted to do a full rebuild HD rebuild on it, he knew what it was going to be used for and built it accordingly. Then after less than 1k miles (18 months though) it started acting up and slipping. I took it out to him, he agreed it was dying and said for me to take it out and he would look at it. I was fine with that, and appreciated him dealing with me on it. I took it to him and he said the clutches were burnt, said it seems like it had over heated (yes I do have a very large cooler). He said he would do the clutches and a light rebuild on it for the price of parts (few hundred dollars), and said that that would fix it which I let him do. I put it back in, and it has now been probably 2 years, again less than 1k miles and now I seem to be loosing 3rd gear in it again. I’m not exactly sure what the issue is. I was planning on putting in a 465, but after talking with Steve Watson at Off Road Deign in CO he said he sees no reason why a TH400 shouldn’t be able to hold up to my setup and recommended I stick with it.
I appreciate the responses and recommendations. I just wanted to share my story about Ted. I am not trying to bad mouth him, he worked with me through it the first few times, even when it was past his warranty. All this and not to mention he is a super nice man to deal with and has built excellent trannies for a few of my friends regular cars and trucks. I am not sure what to do now aside from move on and have someone else build it.

Does anyone have any input at all? I’m just getting sick of the thing always dying. 1st gear still feels very strong as does 2nd, just 3rd doesn't feel right at all. It’s a K5 with a mild 350, 203/205 doubler, 1 tons with 4.56 gears, and 38” TSL SX. Thanks!

Sorry to hijack, but it's kinda on topic.

Does anyone think a shop around raleigh would setup the clutch packs for me if I brought them in already out of the transmission? I bought a rebuild kit, but I can't get the clearances close, and I just need my jeep back on the road.

I have a guy that dose awesome work for our shop, how ever he is about 4 hours away. If I can help just let me know, he dose great work and has very fair prices. If I can help just let me know.
Thanks

Could the tranny cooler possibly be screwed up, like clogged or something? It seems odd that your tranny would overheat and cause damage that quickly many times in a row.

yeah, get a temp guage on it and see what's going on...

Well I have a B&M tranny cooler on the truck. When I had the clutches done the first time b/c it overheated I started looking into other things to cool it. I found people taking about using AC condensors as coolers. I mentioned it to Ted and he thought it would work well as long as I cleaned it out well. So I cleaned my old one AC condenser out and hooked it up. So I have that as a cooler as well as the B&M one. I also added a tranny temp gauge in the pan at that point and have had that since then. It gets up to about 180 or 200 i believe, but nothing crazy hot.

Any other thoughts?
