Well thanks for all the responses. I have a bit of a dilemma though, all of ya’ll recommend ted’s, however he is the one who built it the first 2 times. Ted built a 700R4 for me a long time ago which worked fine. I then upgraded to a TH400 I found used and ran it for a while with no problems. It then went out of course, so I took it to ted to do a full rebuild HD rebuild on it, he knew what it was going to be used for and built it accordingly. Then after less than 1k miles (18 months though) it started acting up and slipping. I took it out to him, he agreed it was dying and said for me to take it out and he would look at it. I was fine with that, and appreciated him dealing with me on it. I took it to him and he said the clutches were burnt, said it seems like it had over heated (yes I do have a very large cooler). He said he would do the clutches and a light rebuild on it for the price of parts (few hundred dollars), and said that that would fix it which I let him do. I put it back in, and it has now been probably 2 years, again less than 1k miles and now I seem to be loosing 3rd gear in it again. I’m not exactly sure what the issue is. I was planning on putting in a 465, but after talking with Steve Watson at Off Road Deign in CO he said he sees no reason why a TH400 shouldn’t be able to hold up to my setup and recommended I stick with it.
I appreciate the responses and recommendations. I just wanted to share my story about Ted. I am not trying to bad mouth him, he worked with me through it the first few times, even when it was past his warranty. All this and not to mention he is a super nice man to deal with and has built excellent trannies for a few of my friends regular cars and trucks. I am not sure what to do now aside from move on and have someone else build it.
Does anyone have any input at all? I’m just getting sick of the thing always dying. 1st gear still feels very strong as does 2nd, just 3rd doesn't feel right at all. It’s a K5 with a mild 350, 203/205 doubler, 1 tons with 4.56 gears, and 38” TSL SX. Thanks!
